SL vs IND Match Result
- Cricket World Cup 2019 Match 44
264/7 (50.0 ov)
265/3 (43.3 ov)
India won by 7 wickets
Player of the match:
That's all from us at Sportskeeda! Do join us for the 1st semi-final from Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Till then, this is Shashwat Kumar signing off! Goodbye and goodnight!
So, India have done everything that was in their control to book their spot in the first semi-final at Manchester on Tuesday. They started off well and immediately put the Sri Lankans under pressure with a flurry of wickets. Mathews and Thirimanne then joined hands to haul the Islanders out of that hole and that enabled them to post a rather competitive total of 264 on the board.
However, the Sri Lankans were quite listless with the ball and that allowed India to canter to the 265-run target the former set. Rohit conjured his 5th hundred at this World Cup whereas Rahul notched him his 2nd ODI century. Kohli came in after the fall of Rohit and ensured that the Indians didn't face any hiccups towards the end.
Now all eyes shift to the ongoing encounter at Manchester where Australia's outcome against South Africa will determine who the Men In Blue face in the last four.
"We wanted to play good cricket but we didn't expect such a score-line in the group stages. It's an amazing bunch to be a part of. It is a real honour for us to play together. More or less, everything is set for the semi-final. However, we don't want to be one dimensional. We will play according to the conditions and with respect to that, we are happy on where we stand currently. For us, the opposition has never mattered. If we don't play well, anyone can beat us and if we play well, we can beat anyone. Regardless of who we play, we want to focus on our performance and give our best. Pandya has been outstanding. He was slightly expensive in the first couple of games but he has come back well. He thinks like a batsman when he bowls and that helps. It feels great to have a cricketer who contributes in as many facets as he does."
We did not get a good total on the board. Angelo did his best. We kept losing wickets and if we get a good start we need to capitalise. But, we lost wickets today and Angelo and Lahiru did well to rebuild. After this World Cup, we have to sit back and think about what we have to do further down the line. Four years is a long, long period and we have guys who can play a good role for Sri Lanka. We need to sit with the selectors and make some decisions. We will miss Malinga. He has done a lot for Sri Lanka in all formats, ODIs, Tests and T20s. Everyone has to end his career and now is time for him. We need to find a new guy who can fulfill his job and we need search after this World Cup.
Rohit Sharma is the Player of the Match!
"I am trying to go out there and doing my job. Not thinking about milestones. My job is to keep it simple and do the job which will help the team get past the finish line. I assess how the pitch is, how the bowlers are bowling and then I decide on how I need to go about my batting. I have learned from my mistakes in the past. I don't try to look into the past and I want to start everyday afresh. I think I have not played any ODIs, not gotten any hundreds and that's how I like to approach it. I like to keep my head straight and do the job at hand. Malinga has been a champion bowler for Sri Lanka and Mumbai Indians as well. He is definitely a match winner and he has shown it many times in the past. World cricket will miss him. As a team, we are not thinking about who we will face. We want to celebrate today's victory rather than think about what is going on between Australia and South Africa. We want to concentrate on ourselves and put on a good show in the semi-finals."
And a streaky outside edge propels India past the finish line!
Not the picture-book finish people had in mind, but one that will do the job nonetheless. India win the contest by 7 wickets and do it with 39 balls to spare. A commanding victory for Kohli's troops with a semi-final on the horizon.
43.3 Isuru Udana to Hardik Pandya. Slower length ball, to leg on the front foot pushing, outside edge to third man for 1 run, fielded by Rajitha.
43.2 Isuru Udana to Virat Kohli. Off cutter length ball, down leg side on the front foot Steer, to short third man for 1 run, fielded by de Silva.
And Lasith Malinga's final delivery in World Cup cricket goes for a boundary! Talk about irony!
He goes for the yorker and over-pitches. Pandya makes the most of it and clips it past square leg to collect his first four of the afternoon. Time to start the Tuk-Tuk, this is going to end very soon!
43.1 Isuru Udana to Virat Kohli. Short, down leg side on the back foot defending, to short mid wicket for no runs, fielded by Tillakaratna.

Right then! Lasith Malinga is into his final over in World Cup cricket! Another legend walking into the sunset!
Hardik Pandya walks out!
Review for LBW! And Pant bites the dust!
Udana bowls a slower length delivery on off-stump and Pant tries to hit it into next week. He is deceived by the lack of pace and swings at least a few minutes early. The ball hits him just below the waist as he is down on one knee. The Sri Lankan players go up but the umpire gives it not out. Sri Lanka review and DRS returns with three reds. Pant is sent packing and he misses an opportunity to come back to the dressing room unbeaten.

Pant gets underway with a four!
Udana goes looking for the yorker but falls just a little short. The ball is there to be hit and Pant does so. In fact, he bludgeons it past the bowler to collect his first boundary.

Crunch! Kohli absolutely laces one through cover for four!
Udana pitches one full and Kohli nails his cover drive with aplomb. He climbs into the delivery and cracks it past cover. Is there anything purer than the Kohli cover drive in the world of cricket?
41.1 FOUR! Isuru Udana to Virat Kohli. Length ball, off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past deep extra cover for 4 runs.
