It was the Melbourne Stars skipper Nicole Faltum who won the toss and put the Sydney Thunders in. The Stars got off to a perfect start as a sensational piece of fielding by Tess Flintoff at covers brought about the downfall of Tammy Beaumont. Phoebe Litchfield was joined by Amy Jones in the middle as the duo looked to overcome the early loss.

Kim Garth started off well but the rest of the pacers were far from their best and kept on drifting down the leg side. Litchfield took full toll on the Melbourne Stars bowlers and made full use of the fielding restrictions in the first four overs. Amy Jones also played some fine shots but couldn't quite make the impact that Litchfield was making at the other end.

Litchfield struck 7 fours and a six during her brilliant unbeaten knock of 50 off 34 deliveries but Amy Jones took 46 deliveries for her 44. Despite losing just a solitary wicket, the Sydney Thunders were unable to stamp their authority as the Melbourne Stars' bowlers bowl in the right channels, not allowing the batters to cut loose. When rain stopped play, the Sydney Thunders had reached 102 at the end of 13.4 overs.
