Goodbye!
...
And that brings us to the end of Day 1 coverage of individual badminton events.

To sum up the day for India:

Saina Nehwal breezed through her opener, PV Sindhu survived a scare in singles.

In doubles, both men's doubles pairs (Rankireddy-Shetty & Attri-Reddy) and the women's doubles pair of Reddy and Ponnappa won. Sunil and Panda lost their opener in women's doubles.

India's campaign came to an end in mixed doubles with both Ponnappa-Rankireddy and Reddy-Chopra losing in the first round.
...
While Chopra and Reddy's loss was understandable as they lost to the World No. 9 pair, Rankireddy and Ponnappa's loss will hurt.

The Indians were error-prone, especially Ponnappa and failed to show the confidence and rhythm they have been showing off late. What is most disappointing is they made this early an exit after reaching the quarter-finals at the World Championships just a few days back.
...
With the back-to-back twin losses, India's campaign comes to an end in mixed doubles on the first day of individual competition itself
...
And this time, they make no mistake!

Reddy and Chopra lose 15-21, 12-23 to Goh and Chan

...
Reddy makes an error on serve at a crucial juncture.....the lead is now with the Malaysians at 17-16
...
SIX POINTS IN A ROW FOR THE MALAYSIANS! THEY HAVE COMPLETELY TURNED IT AROUND!

16-15 NOW
...
There is injection of pace and power into the Malaysians' shots...they are being very, very aggressive and going for body smashes!

Indians now up 15-13
...
14-8 now is the lead for the Indians...they are calmly building on their score
...
And the Indians are very much buoyed by that scoreline....there is spring in the step of both Reddy and Chopra....taking the shuttle early and going all-out on attack!

12-6 for the Indians
...
11-6 lead for the Indians going into the mid-game interval.
...
It's 10-5 now for Reddy and Chopra.

They seem to have found a way to keep the Malaysians away for now

Their angles are working brilliantly.

...
Reddy and Chopra have lost the first game 21-15 and are now up 8-4 in the second game.

Can they stage a comeback and enforce a decider?
...
But let's turn our attention once again to Reddy and Chopra
...
Considering the fact that Rankireddy and Ponnappa made it to the quarter-finals at the World Championships just a few day back, this is a disappointing result indeed.
...
Rankireddy and Ponnappa have lost their first round match 25-27, 16-21 to the Thai pair of Puavaranukroh and Taerattanachai
...
Rankireddy and Ponnappa save ONE MATCH POINT
