Japan have created history with a masterful display of big-game management, They thoroughly deserved this after absolutely dominating the second half. Colombia came out strangely subdued in the second half, and that spelled doom for them.

83' Kawashima thumps one forward in return; and this one almost catches Colombia napping again - but this time Sanchez turns on the afterburners to catch up with Osako and clear the ball off Inui for a Colombian throw-in.

82' Sakai then tries to get the killer blow in with a whipped curler into the box; where Osako can't quite get enough behind it. Ospina belts it forward, where Bacca promptly loses it.

80' Japan are quite happy now playing keep ball and asking the 9 outfielders of Colombia to run around chasing it. Save James and Bacca, the lot of them look dead on their feet -- they've certainly put in a helluva shift.

79' Mujica sends in a lovely ball that Muriilo can only glance into the hands of a relieved Kawashima. Japan make their second sub as they look to protect their lead; Shibasaki off, Yamaguchi on.

THEY MAKE COLOMBIA PAY FOR THEIR CAUTION! Honda swings in a delightful cross in, Osako leaps like a salmon and absolutely leathers a header into the far side of Ospina's goal. Smashing goal, this.

70' Bacca's first task is to try and chase a lost cause from a Barrios pass forward - Nagatomo does just about enough to keep the powerful Villarreal man at bay

69' Japan make their first change as they take of Shinji Kagawa for that wily old fox, Keisuke Honda. Pekerman meanwhile is going for it - he throws on Carlos Bacca in the place of Jose Izquierdo.

68' Inui slips in Nagatomo with a delightfully deft touch -- the ball bounces off Ospina and Osako almost pounces before Sanchez muscles everyone away and thumps it clear

67' Inui drifts into the box and sends Barrios flying into space with a lovely shimmy of his hips - his shot, though, is straight at Sanchez's massive skull. The ball rebounds out, and Haraguchi does well to win a corner. Which Murillo heads clear, Shibasaki sends it in again but Mujica does well to mop things up

65' Davinson Sanchez looks to spring clear as an excellent Barrios tackle stops Kagawa in his tracks -- but the Spurs' man's ball is well cut out by Yoshida. Japan press forward in nnumbers

64' OUCH! Barrios smashes into Kagawa - who rolls around in a pretty little circle. That does the trick, Barrios gets a yellow.

62' Japan are knocking it around with slow purpose - but Yoshida kills it all with a useless lump into the box. Colombia look to breka forward through Falcao and Izquierdo, but the Brighton winger's ball is a touched delayed and Sakai can thump it clear

61' Haraguchi gets taken out by Arias as Japan look to break; they take the freekick quickly and Sakai catches everyone out by springing clear into the box; from where he lashes a shot across the face of Ospina's goal

60' James' first touch almost releases Arias into the box, but the fullback's control can't match the quality of his mate's pass and Japan move forward

59' OH YOSHIDA! That joy almost turned into despair right there! Shibasaki swung in a delicious freekick that Yoshida rose highest to thump a header just wide.

58' Barrios goes steaming into Sakai and that' a freekick from which Shibasaki will look to create mischief. Pekerman takes the break to bring on James Rodriguez in place of the excellent Juan Quintero. The yellow half of the Modrovia Arena erupts in joy

57' OH! SAVE! OSPINA! Inui, in acres of space down the left, is played in by Kagawa. He takes a touch, drifts in, and tries to curl one into the bottom corner; saved well by Ospina

56' Colombia have started the second half like they've replaced their football team with their field hockey one -- they've been a shadow of their selves. Quintero looks to address this by stealing the ball in his own half and starting a slow passing move, but Falcao' touch desersts him and Japan spring forward on the counter

55' Falcao looks to jink his way into the final third, but Hasebe reads his intentions perfectly and stops his opposite captain in his tracks. This is all Japan now.

54' BAD, BAD DEFENDING FROM SANCHEZ! Osako turns Sanchez with absurd ease - like he showed Sanchez a magic trick that made him look the other way, but without doing anything - but he can only shoot straight at Ospina. The corner is then collected brilliantly by Ospina to allow his team some breathing space.

53' OH! Shoji lifts a useful ball into the middle where Osako's cushioned header is just out of reach of Shinji Kagawa's charge! Much better from Japan, this.

52' Colombia break forward through some lovely hold up play from Falcao - but Izquierdo can't find his skipper with a through ball (Falcao had wanted it at his feet) and Japan can start building from the back again

51' Hasebe looks to find Inui's clever little run but Sanchez heads clear - Kagawa then attempts to do the trick with Osako's run; but this time Muriillo is in the way of the Samurai charge.

50' Jaoan move forward silkily, Inui exchanging quick paseses with Kagawa - and he wins his side a corner. OOO! Shibasaki takes it, Yoshida takes a touch and attempts to turn and shoot - but is smothered by a sea of yellow.

48' Japan have started this 45 much better than they ended the last and a lovely Haraguchi crossfield finds Inui in space down the left; he whips in an interesting looking ball but Murillo authoritatively heads it clear. It's all Japan, though, at the moment - that one man advantage finally showing.

47' Bad through balls from Maya Yoshida, Johan Mujica, and the veteran Nagatomo sees possession being exchanged with far too much rapidity. Everybody needs to take a breath

46' Colombia pump it long, Falcao chests it down but Quintero's volleyed ball out to Izqueirdo has too much fizz to it. Japan move forward steadily but a loose Nagatomo pass sees the ball go out for a Colombian throw-in

Fun Fact for the day - Juan Quintero is the first Colombian player to score at 2 World Cups. He scored his previous Mundial goal also on 19 June (vs Cote d'Ivorie in 2014).

PEEP! HALFTIME! TEN-MEN COLOMBIA 1 - 1 JAPAN

A cracker of a first half, this - Colombia have been excellent despite going down to 10 men. Kagawa's penalty was cool; Quintero's under-the-wall freekick even cooler.

This is set up for a cracker of a second half.
