With this fourth penalty shootout win, Croatia join Germany and Argentina as the only nations to have done so. In the process, they have reached their third World Cup semi-final.

After Marquinhos missed his penalty he sunk to his knees head bowed and did not look up. Croatia meanwhile ran as a team to their goalkeeper. Jubilation and ecstasy at one end and sheer heartbreak at the other. That's why football is considered the GOAT sport.

A word of praise for these three in particular - Dominik Livakovic, Josip Juranovic and of course Luka Modric. The first two were outstanding and a major reason why Croatia were in it till the 120 minutes and then what can one say about Modric who was tireless. You just to have admire this Croatian outfit. After going behind to that Neymar goal, they scored with their only shot on target with the help of a big deflection from Marquinhos and then the centre-back missed his penalty which knocked his side out. Crazy for Croatia just hung on and on and repelled whatever was thrown at them. And when it went to penalties, their experience and Livakovic came up trumps.
