The match, which was calm and composed for the most part was ignited after 73 minutes of play that saw two goals being scored with a penalty awarded to the visitors. Alfred Jaryan received his marching orders at the end but Aizawl held on at the end.

The two sides come into this match after contrasting results in their respective derbies as Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal 2-0 in the Kolkata Derby whereas Aizawl FC lost 2-1 against NEROCA FC at home in the Northeast Indian Derby.
