That was a great effort from the veteran Indian in the fourth set. He was able to keep his errors in check and varied the shots very well that seemed to have taken the game away from the higher-ranked Dane.
But he made mistakes right after getting set points, which cost him the tiny opportunity that he had.
Nevertheless, his first round win and today's show will encourage him to do well, especially with the Commonwealth Games less than a month from now!
Good evening! Hello and welcome to Sportskeeda's live coverage of the ITTF Qatar Open where Achanta Sharath Kamal meets World No. 26 Jonathan Groth of Denmark in the Round of 16.
Indian veteran Sharath Kamal caused a major upset in the first round as he eased past World No 7 Koki Niwa of Japan 4-1, winning 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 14-12, 11-9. He displayed an array of attacking shots throughout the game, which consisted of inch-perfect forehand and backhand top-spins. His defensive work was pretty sleek as well as he manoeuvred Koki's serves without any difficulties.
It was a big win for the 35-year-old as he had never managed to beat Koki previously, perhaps it was the biggest in recent Indian table tennis history. Today, he meets Groth, who is a dangerous opposition. The match will surely be an exciting affair, stay tuned for all live updates.
