But for Srikanth, it's the end of the road in Rio. He exceeded most expectations by strolling to the quarterfinals without dropping a game, but he was always going to be the underdog against a player as brilliant and experienced as Lin Dan. That he managed to put such a scare into the Chinese is a mark of what a great future Srikanth has.
Lin Dan will now face Lee Chong Wei in the semifinals on Friday, and doesn't that promise to be a cracking encounter.
Between Saina Nehwal's ascension to the World No. 1 ranking, Sindhu's run to the semis here, and Srikanth's fabulous performance against Lin Dan, one thing is for certain: Indian badminton is in very safe hands.
Srikanth may not have won a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but he won millions of hearts. And who knows, he could possibly be aiming for gold come Tokyo 2020!
After Sindhu's heroics yesterday, Srikanth has brought plenty of cheer to Indian fans too with his spirited display. He'd have dearly loved to have won this match, but he can certainly hold his head high after this performance.
Srikanth led for vast stretches of the third game, but Lin brought all of his experience to the fore to get him over the line. He's not called the Greatest of all Time for nothing!
After the first game, you'd have been forgiven for expecting a totally one-sided demolition by Lin. But full credit to Srikanth for the way he hung in there, and turned on the heat just in the nick of time.
It's a disappointing result for Srikanth, but you've got to applaud his spirit and talent to take the match this far. Lin certainly had to work for that win!
