And that has prompted Sevilla to look elsewhere, with out-of-favour Everton forward Sandro now a possibility before the transfer window closes.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has still not given up hope of landing the striker he desperately wants with the January transfer window entering its final few hours.

"We have some time and we have an important game tomorrow, I will not talk about the window. I will concentrate on the game and ensure we will not lose focus on that," Benitez said in his press conference today.

"We still have time I am confident we can do something. I will not spend too much time speaking about that.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is ready to offer Raphael Varane in part-exchange for Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Perez wants to sign a new keeper in the summer and feels Courtois is more attainable than Manchester United No.1 David de Gea. 

Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in Courtois, but Perez hopes including Varane in any deal will help Madrid to win the chase for the Belgium international.

Crystal Palace are in talks to sign one of two new strikers – Preston’s Jordan Hugill or FC Midtjylland’s Alexander Sorloth – ahead of the transfer deadline. 

Palace have made an offer to sign Hugill, but their valuation falls some way short of what Preston are looking for.Palace’s budget for a striker this month has been between £10m and 12m. 

The club had been trying to sign Khouma Babakar from Fiorentina and considered a move for Ashley Barnes, but Roy Hodgson publically ruled out a move for the Burnley forward on Monday.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo believes attackers Yannick Carrasco and Kevin Gameiro are unlikely to leave the club this month.

Both Carrasco and Gameiro have attracted interest from elsewhere this month and although Cerezo refused to rule out the possibility of player sales before the close of the transfer window, he hinted that the Belgian and the Frenchman are likely to stay put.

When discussing the possibility of players leaving Atleti this month, Cerezo told Marca: “At the moment no. Maybe it’s possible that a player leaves, but at the moment we don’t have anything planned. 

"[Yannick] Carrasco is a magnificent player that suits us very well, [Kevin] Gameiro is an extraordinary forward. And I think that they are very well here."

Roma will target Genoa star Diego Laxalt as they search for a replacement for Chelsea-bound Emerson Palmieri, Sky Sport in Italy reports.

The Premier League side have agreed a £17.5 million fee with Roma for the defender, and the Serie A side are now looking at Laxalt, with Bruno Peres potentially being offered as a makeweight.

Athletic Bilbao have raked in €65m from the departure of Aymeric Laporte and are set to sign Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez to replace the Frenchman. However, they are also looking to splash the cash to sign Merino, who has been a long-term target for the Basque club.

Newcastle are willing to accept offers for the Spaniard and Athletic Bilbao have shown the most interest in securing his services.

Lille are under pressure to sell as they need to comply with FFP rules, but no agreement has been reached.
