Clarke’s average of 16.71 is the second worst by an Ashes captain after Ricky Ponting who managed just 16.14 in the 2010-11 disaster on home soil, after which his captaincy came to an end.

Clarke has now lost four Ashes campaigns and more matches on English soil than any Australian in history.

Michael Clarke is to retire from international cricket at the end of the Ashes series. He took the call after being told by the Australia management he would not be in the side after the Oval Ashes Test in two weeks’ time.

In the last 12 months, Clarke has featured in nine Tests, and his form has been pretty poor. Over these 9 test matches, he has been successful in scoring more than 50 only once.
