A bit of enterprising intercepting from Valencia led to Lukaku getting the ball - who then played in Sanchez with an absolute peach of a ball - Sanchez takes it around Dubravka, inexplicably waited and took a touch - before Lejuene slid with a superb block. Why Sanchez waited only he will know.

54' O SANCHEZ! He mishits one from the left side, inside the box. A couple of moments later, Sanchez slaloms past 2 defenders inside the box and tries to sidefoot one home but it is deflected off for a corner.

53' Lukaku heads the ball into the net from a Smalling header inside the area. But quite clearly, Lukaku pushes the defender from behind and the goal won't count.

51' Young brought down by Ritchie as he is hounded by a tag-team of Ritchie and Perez. United win a freekick and de Gea propels it upfield. But the speculative pass to pick out Martial is too heavy and ends up going out for a throw-in to the Toons.

50' Lingard runs straight into traffic after United break on the counter. That's rather poor from Lingard and he concedes a freekick when it was there to be won.

49' United are looking better in the attacking third so far and their fans will hope that it will continue. Meanwhile, Newcastle break again and Young concedes a throw-in near the corner flag on United's left-hand side.

48' Ritchie is fed a delightful through ball by Shelvy but he is marginally offside. Fine margins there.

Young holds him up, and Kenedy's cross doesn't come to much. United, in turn, try to launch their own corner but Lingard's five-yard ball to Lukaku is abysmal

42' Yedlin brings Lingard down as the Englishman chases down what had looked to be a lost cause... no caution, and Lingard is furious.

40' Smalling lunges in on Gayle wins nothing of the ball and gets away with it. Shelvey lunges in on Pogba, gets nothing of the ball and the ref blows for a foul. Rafa Benitez is close to self-combustion
