Good night

00:43 (IST)20 AUG 2016

Khushbir Kaur finished the race in 54th position with a time of 1:40:33. Sapna Punia, the other Indian in the race, did not complete the race and dropped out of the race at the 8km mark.

The two Indians did superbly well to qualify for the Olympics, but they would be a tad disappointed at not improving on their personal bests.

00:38 (IST)20 AUG 2016

There are several athletes still in the race, grimacing in pain, but determined to finish the race. This is what the Olympics is all about! Simply great to see!!

00:34 (IST)20 AUG 2016

India's Kaur is still in the race. She crossed the 18km mark with a time of 1:30:29.

00:32 (IST)20 AUG 2016

Hong finished the race at 1:28:35 and was closely followed by Gonzalez with a time of 1:28:37.

00:31 (IST)20 AUG 2016

Hong Liu wins! Gonzalez finishes 2nd and Xiuzhi Lu takes the last medal place! The Chinese have taken gold and bronze!

00:30 (IST)20 AUG 2016

Hong Liu and Maria Gonzalez are 1 and 2 and broken away from the rest.

00:29 (IST)20 AUG 2016

The leaders go around the final turn!

00:28 (IST)20 AUG 2016

No World or Olympic Record today. But, the action at the front is close! Still, too close to call!

00:27 (IST)20 AUG 2016

FINAL KM!

00:27 (IST)20 AUG 2016

One of the leaders gets a yellow card! This is a nail-biting finish!

00:26 (IST)20 AUG 2016

The athletes have not only tired legs but are mentally worn out too.

00:24 (IST)20 AUG 2016

It's too close to call at the front. But, you can place a big wager on a Chinese win.

00:23 (IST)20 AUG 2016

4th and 5th positions are just three seconds behind the first three.

00:23 (IST)20 AUG 2016

18km! At the final stretch. 2 more kms to the finish line. The top 3 crossed the line with a time of 1:20:24. Hong Liu of China, Maria Gonzalez of Mexico and Xiuzhi Lu are the three leaders.

00:19 (IST)20 AUG 2016

1:17:00 up and the Chinese are in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions.

00:17 (IST)20 AUG 2016

A medal for Kaur is highly unlikely, but she will be gunning for a national record and to beat her own time.

00:15 (IST)20 AUG 2016

We may witness an Olympic Record today at the current pace!

00:14 (IST)20 AUG 2016

16km! The leaders have picked up pace again, amazingly!! They cross the 16km mark at 1:11:43. Just 8 minutes to cover 2km!

00:11 (IST)20 AUG 2016

Kaur is in 54th position after the 14km mark. She crossed the 14km mark with a time of 1:09:00, 5:59 behind the leader.

00:09 (IST)20 AUG 2016

The Indian Khusbir Kaur has 1 warning for a bent knee. Two more infractions and she'll be disqualified.

She's got to focus and try to break her own record of 1:33:07.

00:08 (IST)20 AUG 2016

Could we see a new Olympic Record today? The current record is 1:25:02 by Elena Lashmanova. The runners have covered the first 14 km in 1:03:01. 6 more kms to go!

00:05 (IST)20 AUG 2016

Brazil's Erica De Sena is also with the lead pack. She will be motivated to finish in medal positions in front of her home fans!

00:05 (IST)20 AUG 2016

14km! The Chinese are leading the race. Gonzalez from Mexico is sandwiched between three Chinese athletes at the head of the race.

00:03 (IST)20 AUG 2016

It's the end of the day for Sapna Punia. She's out of the race. Khushbir Kaur is in 49th place after the 12km mark.

00:02 (IST)20 AUG 2016

Several athletes are grimacing from pain after running in the heat and having covered 12kms.

23:59 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The humidity is at a high 81%!!

23:58 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The course has sprinklers spraying water to keep the athletes cool.

23:58 (IST)19 AUG 2016

12km! The leaders have now moved past the 12km mark. A smaller bunch at the front is being formed. Xiuzhi Lu, Gonzalez and Hong Liu are slowly pulling away.

23:56 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The other Indian Sapna Punia has dropped off the ranking! She hasn't crossed the 10km mark.

23:54 (IST)19 AUG 2016

Khusbir Kaur crossed the 10km mark at 47:35. She is in 48th place.

23:51 (IST)19 AUG 2016

This race is going to go down to the last 100 metres!

23:51 (IST)19 AUG 2016

10km! The leaders cross the 10km mark at 45:24. The leaders are still closely bunched up in the front.

23:50 (IST)19 AUG 2016

An athlete is down! This might be just walking, but the heat and the distance takes a toll on the body.

23:46 (IST)19 AUG 2016

43 minutes into the race, there is a group of 20 athletes bunched up and leading the race.

23:41 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The athletes are beginning to struggle now. It is very easy to lose concentration and get an infraction from the referees.

23:40 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The Indians cross the 8km timing beam with a time of 37:43. Kaur and Punia are 48th and 49th respectively.

23:39 (IST)19 AUG 2016

Remember, the first three in the race win medals.

23:38 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The leaders have crossed the 8km mark! Several athletes in the front have bunched up and cross the line with a time of 36:25.

23:37 (IST)19 AUG 2016

So, how does an athlete not get disqualified from the race - One foot of the athlete must be on the ground when the other is lifted. The front leg must also straighten when it touches the ground.

23:36 (IST)19 AUG 2016

35 minutes into the race, two athletes have been disqualified from the race for infractions.

23:33 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The Indians are 38 seconds behind the leader.

23:33 (IST)19 AUG 2016

Xiuzhi Lu is leading the pack and is followed by Drahotova of Czech Republic and Hong of China.

23:31 (IST)19 AUG 2016

They crossed the 6km mark with a time of 28:04 and 28:05.

23:31 (IST)19 AUG 2016

Kaur and Punia have moved up and are in 45th and 46th place respectively.

23:29 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The pace is quickening up!

23:29 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The opening pack just cross the 6km mark at 27:26.

23:29 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The yellow cards/paddles haven't come out as often so far. The walkers are going by the book!

23:27 (IST)19 AUG 2016

The leading group of walkers are opening a gap from the rest of the pack. They seem to be in a league of their own.

23:26 (IST)19 AUG 2016

China's Hong Liu and Xiuzhi Lu are following closely behind the leader.
