The first medal ceremony of Rio Olympics 2016 is going on and there are two Chinese athletes on the podium while USA occupies the third. Is this going to be the course for the rest of the Games? We will find out.
What an excellent note to begin the medal counting in Rio de Janeiro here. A teenager, up against seasoned shooters, conjures up magic to take home the gold. USA win the gold medal but China take two medals. This competition will only become more cut throat as the tournament progresses.

Virginia Thrasher has set an Olympic Record here in Rio with a score of 208.0. What a phenomenal performance from the youngster. She is one for the future and her present is not so bad either.

1. Virginia Thrasher (USA) - Gold
2. Du Li (China) - Silver
3. Yi Siling (China) - Bronze
LAST SHOT of Women's 10m Air Rifle and Du needs to do something extraordinary. Thrasher takes the shot and it is a 10.4 GOLD MEDAL for United States of America. Du Li finishes with a 10.1. Teenager Thrasher is the first Gold Medalist of Rio Olympics 2016. WOW!!! Stunning from the American.
Thrasher scores a 10.4, it more than confirms her gold medal while Du comes in with a 10.1!
Two more shots remaining and Virginia Thrasher is in the lead. She needs to be just calm and composed to get the gold. Du Li is lurking behind though. The American needs to be careful. SOLID 10.5 from Thrasher and Du cannot beat her. Thrasher is inching close to the gold medal here.
The American scores a 10.5! Du Li takes her time and matches Thrasher with a 10.5 as well!
Thrasher is just 0.7 ahead of Du Li in the battle for the gold.
Disappointing from Siling as she succumbs to pressure and sadly will not be able to retain her gold medal. She takes Bronze medal with a score of 185.4.
Yi Siling scores a 9.8 while Du Li comes up with a 10.8! Yi Siling finishes with bronze!
Virginia Thrasher is still leading and is 0.5 ahead of Du Li. THRASHER, the 19 year old shoots a 10.7 while Li shoots 10.2. Siling takes her shot and fires a 10.3. We are inching towards the end here.

The Chinese duo are competing with each other now. Siling fires 10.5 and Li fires 10.8. WHAT A SHOT!!! WHAT A SHOT!!! She has climbed into second places and it is curtains for Barbara Engleder, she just misses out and ends on a score of 165.0 GUTTED for her.
Du Li shoots a 10.8 and moves up to second place and the German Barbara Engleder is knocked out.
Yi Siling gets back on track with a 10.6. Thrasher though stays on top of the charts.

Quite surprisingly, the Chinese are lagging behind and neither are in a medal place. VDOVINA fires a 9.2 and that hampers her chances of getting a medal. This getting interesting and now the Du Li has climbed into second spot. TENSE

WOHOOO!! 10.8 from Du Li and she stays in contention. Elaheh Ahmadi finishes in sixth place with a score of 122.5. She has done really well, given the kind of form other shooters were in.

You have to feel gutted for Ayonika Paul here and understand how tough it is to fight in your first Olympics. This will be a great learning curve for her and hope she comes back stronger.
An interesting story within the qualifying round here, Pakistani shooter Minhal Sohail has finished above both Apurvi and Ayonika, scoring 413.2 in her four rounds.

As far as the Indian shooters are concerned, it was not the kind of start they were looking for in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Both Apurvi and Ayonika were quick to be off the blocks and took their shots quite early. However, this is the Olympics and the competition was quite tough. All eyes will be on Jitu Rai now. Can he deliver?
This has been an excellent qualifying round overall with some upsets and some top class shooting, especially from Du Li, who has set a world record. Given her form and performance in the qualifying, she seems to be unstoppable. Will she win gold? Follow this space as we will be back with the final of the Women's 10m Air Rifle Final.
