Mirabai Chanu - (No rank, no score accrued in the clean and jerk stage)

That's too big a weight for her. Thailand's Sopita Tanasan claims the gold medal in the 48 kgs category with an invincible performance. Some late opposition provided by Indonesia's Agustiani. Japan's Miyake claims the bronze medal spot, recovering after an unconvincing start.

Can Agustiani lift 115 kgs for an extremely unlikely gold medal lift? Tanasan hugs her coach on the sidelines as the 2nd attempt fails. One final try remains. The last lift of the evening.

Tanasan fails for the first time. Finishes with total score of 200. Can Agustiani do the impossible?

Tanasan to go for her best shot required under the circumstances. Agustiani, who already has a silver ensured, will need to lift 115 kgs to challenge her.

Miyake failed for her 2nd attempt. No faulting for her third attempt though. Lifts 107 kgs, ensures a bronze medal.

Mirabai fails to lift 106 kgs on her third attempt as well. Fails to put up a total. This is so disappointing for an athlete. To not even put up an aggregate score.

Yelisseyeva finally manages to lift 106 kgs. Gets into the bronze medal place, but possible that she will not be able to hold onto it. Exits with score of 186.

She went for high stakes. 106 kgs. And failed. That seemed like too steep an ask from the beginning. Mirabai has one final chance remaining to get a total score.

Yelisseyeva still on score of 183. Has one more lift left to improve that. Mirabai steps up for her second attempt.

Undisputed leader Tanasan comes up and lifts 106 kgs comfortably. If any doubts remained who the gold was going to, this will dispel them all.

Current leader Candelario fails to stretch her lead. Second and third lifts fail for her. Candelario finishes at 187. Still stands a chance of finishing with a medal.

Great overhead strength from Miyake. Lifts 105 kgs. Moves to a score of 186. Wonderful revival after a troubled start to the event.

Mirabai Chanu goes for 104 kgs but fails. Executes the clean but cannot lift it above her body. Legs give way. Next two attempts to be all-important.

So close to a perfect third lift from King. Just dropped it at the last moment though. The American brought out her best performance, but it was not to be. She is out of contention of the medal places.

King's legs give way under 103 kgs. Remains in second position, but heavier lifts remain from others.

Yelisseyeva lifts 103 kgs! A slightly untidy clean but a very good jerk.

Candelario lifts 102 kgs! Moves to the lead, as expected. That's expected to change over the next few lifts as well.

Okoeva finishes with a score of 169. Inconsequential in terms of medal places. We're coming down to the heavy lifters now.

Mauritius' Ranaivosoa fails to lift 100 kgs on her third attempt and gets knocked out. Race for the silver and bronze medal narrowing down to a few contenders now. Wei-Ling's third attempt for 100 kgs draws a single red light from the judges as well! They must be spotting some infringement there.

Wei-Ling's second lift deemed illegal as well. Looked fine though. The Chine Taipei athlete cannot believe it, has her hands raised in exasparation.

The weight moves up to 100 kgs. King makes light work of that. Wei-Ling up next.

Wei-Ling goes for 99 kgs on her first attempt. There was some shaking of the hands and movement of the shoulders. The lift has now been nullified. On for her 2nd attempt. American King is ready for her lift as well. Both of them are medal contenders at this stage.

Paratova's campaign comes to an end. Third attempt is a failed one. 95 kgs remains her best lift in the clean and jerk stage.

Gets it on the second try. Moves to a score of 183. Every successful lift is seeing a new leader at this stage.

Ukranian Paratova up next. Fails to lift 95 kgs. Looked a bit too hurried. She will go for a second attempt straightaway.

Ranaivosoa fared not too well in the first stage. Goes for 93 kgs on her first attempt. Struggles initially but comes up with a brilliant lockout. Moves to a score of 173.

Okoeva starts off the clean and jerk stage. Goes for 92 kgs. No problems there. First weightlifting total score accrued in the Rio 2016 games.

Sopita Tanasan is at 1st place at the halfway stage, with a huge lead with a score of 92! 2nd is on 85 points, Mirabai Chanu (6th) is on 82. All geared up for the clean and jerk stage, where even bigger weights are to be lifted.

Sopita Tanasan lifts 92 kgs. Miles ahead of the rest of her opponents. We're set for a battle for the next two medals. It's going to be very close in the clean and jerk stage, with Mirabai Chanu well in the mix.

This is something special! Tanasan lifts 90 kgs like it is nothing. This must be demoralising for her opponents. The gold medal seems to be taken. The smile on Tanasan's face says it all.

Mirabai Chanu is currently at 6th spot, and will move into the clean and jerk stage at the same position.

Tanasan in the lead by far. Has 3 points over the second best lifter. Will now go for 90 kgs on her second attempt.

Tanasan from Thailand comes up. The last lifter. Going for 88 kgs on her first lift. And pulls off a perfect lift! No doubt who the favourite to win gold is now.

Agustiani fails to lift 87. Candelario lifts 87, takes a few steps forward, but a few steps too much at the end. Has to move off the platform and drops the weight. Another failed lift. Moves into the next stage with a score of 85.

Paratova misses her third attempt as well. Gets 84 from the snatch phase. And up comes Candelario. Fails to lift 87 kgs. Looked as confident as she did when she made it though.

Indonesian Agustiani stakes her claim as one of the favourites as well. Lifts 85 kgs on her 2nd attempt. Gets into the lead. Ukraine's Paratova fails to lift 86 kgs.

Dominican Republic's Candelario lifts 85 kgs perfectly. That's a strong show! Gets into the lead straightaway. Mirabai down to 4th.

Third attempt also fails for Vietnam's Vuong. No successful lifts. Her Rio 2016 is over.

Mirabai fails to lift on her third attempt. She has not been able to match her personal best. She gets 82 points from the snatch phase.

Left elbow shakes considerably, weight falls off. Mirabai walks up to try and lift 84 kgs, 'India', 'India' chants can be heard around.

Kazakhi Yelisseyeva is out of position trying to lift 84 kg on her second lift. Vuong of Vietnam back out for a third attempt. Does not have a registered lift yet. All on the line for her.

First lift of the evening for Paratova of Ukraine. Going for 84 kgs on her first attempt. She gets it up, but with much difficulty and strain. Gets one red light.

Morgan finishes the snatch stage with a successful lift of 83 kgs. That's a new personal best for her.

Morgan King's last attempt coming up. Meanwhile, Vuong's lift has been decided to be illegal. There is some discussion going on out there.
