Russia vs Egypt - Team News

The Russians were handed a big blow when attacker Alan Dzagoev pull his hamstring and will miss the rest of the tournament. He looked pretty involved but luckily for Russia, it didn’t matter on the day as Denis Cheryshev, the man who replaced Dzagoev, turned it on to score a brace and help Russia dismantle Saudi Arabia.

For the Egyptians, Mohamed Salah was missed in their opening game defeat at the hands of Uruguay. The last-gasp goal broke the Egyptian fans’ hearts but boy will they be up for the game with their Egyptian superstar Salah in contention to start. Salah has been out for a few weeks after damaging his shoulder during the Champions League final against Real Madrid in Liverpool colours.

Apart Dzagoev, Russia have a full squad to choose from.

Russia vs Egypt - Key Players

Denis Cheryshev’s start to the tournament will obviously attract more attention now and whether he can replicate his performance or not. Egypt are likely to play on the break, so the wide player will need to make those clever little runs and upset the rigidity of the back line that even Uruguay took  a while to break. Stretching the play will be another thing that Cheryshev will be tasked to do and in that case, the passing of Gazinsky and Zobnin will be key.

For Egypt, there’s no one more important than Salah. They looked toothless last time out and Salah’s ability to take on more than one player could create the space for the likes of Mohsen and El Said to run into. Lest we forget, Salah doesn’t need a second invitation to shoot, which he can. Boy he can! 44 goals for Liverpool this past season means the Russia defence will have be on their toes when he gets the ball anywhere near the attacking third.

Russia vs Egypt - Head to Head

The two teams have never faced each other. Egypt boast a better FIFA ranking, 45, compared to Russia’s 70. Don’t read much into that cause the FIFA ranking is flawed at best. Russia should start as the favourites.
