The Mumbai connection in Haseeb Hameed's growth
England's Haseeb Hameed may have played a lot of his junior cricket in the cold backwaters of Lancashire, but he also has an India connection to thank for his success.
Vidyadhar Paradkar, a coach in Mumbai, was the man Hameed's father turned to for his son to learn the basics of the sport and as a 14-year-old, he took Hameed under his wings.
"He picks up things very quickly. When he was playing those Tests, you could see he was watching the ball closely, which is the main criteria of batting.I also told him to rotate the strike; you have to take singles. And now see, he was rotating the strike. Picking the gaps and going to the non-striker's end are his forte," Paradkar told ESPN Cricinfo.
"Watching the ball, and that your bat should come down in a line, are the two things I emphasised while working with him. He was a very, very quick learner. Initially he was not playing that straight, so I told him the check drive is the best solution," he added.
