Jorge Lorenzo dominated the entire day at the Mugello circuit as he topped the second free practice of the Italian MotoGP as well. He was followed by Dani Pedrosa and this time, it was Nicky Hayden in third. The Ducati rider had already shown a great pace in FP1. Pedrosa’s teammate, Casey Stoner, however, seemed to have slowed down as he finished sixth this time.

Hector Barbera had a remarkable run as he was able recover well from a heavy crash halfway through the session. He eventually set the fourth best time ahead of Andrea Dovizioso. Behind Stoner, Ben Spies set the seventh best time ahead of Cal Crutchlow. Local favourite Valentino Rossi had dropped even further down the order since the morning session and came in ninth this time. The top ten was completed by Stefan Bradl.

Alvaro Bautista had a very disappointing day as the first turn seemed to stand in his way again. He crashed out on the same spot that ruined his morning session; with just twenty minutes to go, he crashed again in turn one.
