Kyle Larson faced an untimely departure from this season's second race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where he started as a favorite with a +45 point advantage over the Round of 12 cutline. Unfortunately, he garnered only one point due to his early exit.
This incident is not the first one in the career of the Hendrick Motorsports driver. Throughout his 12-year career, Larson has experienced a number of sudden and perilous accidents. Below are a few notable ones:
#1. Kyle Larson's #32 Xfinity car broke into three pieces at Daytona
While competing in the Xfinity Series in 2013, Kyle Larson was unexpectedly caught up in a last-lap wreck driving the #32 Chevy for Turner Scott Motorsports in the season's opening race.
Although he was not the initial cause of the accident, Larson's car sustained the most damage. The impact was so intense that it tore his vehicle, sending debris flying into the stands and injuring over two dozen spectators. Larson came out uninjured from the wreckage, which caused both the front and rear ends of his car completely detached.
#2. Geico 500 at Talladega- Kyle Larson's #42 car barrel rolled
During the 2019 Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, while driving the #42 for Chip Ganassi Racing, on the final lap, as the field surged out of turn 2, William Byron in the #24 made contact with David Ragan, sending Byron into the outside wall. His #24 car veered sharply across the track, colliding with Larson's.
The impact forced Larson's car off the track toward the inside retaining wall, where it struck heavily and began to barrel roll down the apron.
#3. Kyle Larson got wrecked during the Auto Club 400 race at Fontana
During the 2016 Auto Club 400, while positioned in 27th place and maintaining high speed, Kyle Larson encountered a left-rear tire failure on Lap 48. The malfunction caused his #42 car to slam into the outside wall, triggering the day's second caution.
The impact was just the beginning; his car then careened across the track and collided forcefully with the inside wall SAFER barrier from the front. The intense energy of the crash lifted his 3,400-pound car completely off the ground for a brief moment before it spun around.
#4. 2017 Indianapolis Motor Speedway race- Kyle Larson's #42 caught flames
With just seven laps remaining, while positioned in 12th place, Ty Dillon's car made slight contact with Larson's #42, leading to multiple collisions with the outside wall. Moments later, flames erupted from beneath the hood of #42, spreading alarmingly close to the sides of Larson’s window, precisely where he had to exit the car.
5. Kyle Larson's #5 Chevy unexpectedly got into the outside wall in Atlanta
In the early laps of the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart Race, Larson lost control between turns 1 and 2, sending his car crashing into the outside Safer barrier. Following closely, Chase Briscoe, unable to decelerate in time, collided with the rear of Larson's car.
The incident, occurring just 56 laps into the race, resulted in heavy damage to both vehicles, forcing them to retire prematurely from the competition.
