Bubba Wallace was heard making a hilarious exchange with his spotter, Freddie Kraft, during Sunday's Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway. The 23XI Racing driver started the 400-lap race in P8 and is looking forward to bagging his first win of the season.
NASCAR is back after a two-week break due to the Summer Olympics in Paris. The Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway is the 23rd race of the season. Bubba Wallace entered the race 14th in the Cup Series standings, seven points behind the provisional playoff cutline.
It is also the first point-paying race to use two tire options; the standard 'prime' tires, which are harder and provide lesser grip, and the softer 'option' tires which are expected to provide a better grip and facilitate faster runs. Each team was allotted six sets of the 'prime' tires and two sets of the 'option' tires.
As the race was on, Kraft asked if Wallace was able to hear him properly. Wallace responded playfully, quoting a line from a 1992 song by Dr. Dre from the movie Straight Outta Compton. Needless to say, Kraft was not expecting that. A Bubba Wallace fan posted the exchange on X:
"Gotta copy on me driver?"
"Ain't nothin but a G-thang baby." - Bubba
"Just when I thought I was gonna have a peaceful night." - Freddie"
Bubba Wallace made his 13th career Cup start and 8th with 23XI Racing at the 0.75-mile Virginian racetrack on Sunday. The Alabama native does not have a top 5 or a top 10 at Richmond yet. His best performance comprises a pair of P12 finishes (2019, 2023).
"Don't feel safe"- Bubba Wallace sheds light on his playoff concerns
Bubba Wallace is in a precarious situation right now. Trackhouse Racing driver Ross Chastain is seven points ahead of the cutline while Wallace is seven points behind Chastain.
Speaking of his playoff concerns, Wallace said in a pre-race interview (via Newsweek):
"Definitely don't feel safe until you're locked in. We have four very good opportunities to do that. Ran really well here in the spring."
Bubba Wallace has four races to prove that he is indeed a playoff worthy contender. Reflecting on those four races, including the one at Richmond, the 30-year-old said:
"Four real good opportunities to make some headway but you know, also four good opportunities to take us out of contention so have to show up and it's time to put it back into gear."
The Toyota driver finished 13th in the Spring race at Richmond Raceway. His boss, Denny Hamlin, who drives the No. 11 machine for Joe Gibbs Racing, won the race.
As things stand, Wallace has two options; either he has to win a race or he gathers enough points to make it to the playoffs for the second time in his career. However, only three races remain till the Round of 16 opener kicks off at Atlanta Motor Speedway on September 8.
