Amid the drama from the controversial Richmond Raceway weekend, Ty Gibbs is questioning the sudden surge in speed from the Richard Childress Racing team. He raised the concern during an interaction with senior NASCAR journalist Bob Pockrass.Since the start of the 2024 Cup Series season, Austin Dillon and the #3 RCR team have been struggling for pace. The duo have managed to finish thrice in the Top 10s and once in the Top 5s. However, the team managed to pull off a surprise during the Cook Out 400 race on August 11th. With good pit strategy throughout the race, Dillon was looking to capture his first victory. A crash on lap 399 brought out the caution flag, pushing the race into its first and only overtime period. On the restart, Dillon lost the lead to Joey Logano. In a desperate move, the RCR driver bumped Logano and a fast-approaching Denny Hamlin on the last turn to claim the win and a spot in the Playoffs. However, after a thorough investigation, NASCAR stripped Dillon from the Top 16 list for his allegedly unsportsmanlike move on the last lap. Now, Ty Gibbs of Joe Gibbs Racing has questioned the sudden gain in speed from the #3 team, ahead of the race at Michigan International Speedway. The clip showcasing the interaction between the 22-year-old NASCAR racer and journalist Bob Pockrass has been posted on X by the latter. Here's a look at the post:Pockrass questioned the young driver on whether he would attempt a move like Austin Dillon."I think I've learned from some of my mistakes in the past. And so I would say no," Ty Gibbs said (0:27 onwards). "But definitely a question of where they got all that speed from as well, right? I mean, they haven't been running good at all. And all of a sudden, they are super fast. So definitely curious on that."A brief look at Ty Gibbs's 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season so far and his chances of making it to the PlayoffsThe former Xfinity Series Champion, Ty Gibbs, has had a mixed start to the NASCAR Cup Series this year. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver grabbed two Top 10s (eighth at Duel 1 at Daytona and tenth at Atlanta Motor Speedway) and one Top 5 finish (fifth at Las Vegas Motor Speedway) in the first five races of the 2024 season.Despite some ups and downs, Gibbs managed to add seven more Top 10s and four Top 5 finishes to his name, including two pole positions. Highlights of his season have been the races at North Wilkesboro Speedway (finished first), Darlington Raceway (second position with 52 points), Circuit of The Americas (third place finish with 37 points), and Chicago Street Race (finished third with 42 points).Ty Gibbs is currently in 11th position in the driver's table, with a total of 602 points (177 points behind leader Kyle Larson). As for his chances in Playoffs this year, Gibbs has to outduel Bubba Wallace at Michigan and Darlington or win one of the remaining three races to secure his place. He is currently 14th in the list, just 18 points above the cutoff.
