The NASCAR fanbase has reacted to Kyle Larson being at the top on the NASCAR Cup Series championship chart. This comes after his recent win at the Sonoma Raceway following which the Hendrick Motorsports driver regained the top spot in the rankings.Larson has been dominating the current Cup Series season. The HMS driver has so far bagged three wins, seven top-5s, and eight top-10s. The Californian has seen himself at the top of the leaderboard for the majority of this season but plummetted after missing his Coca-Cola 600 race.On the other hand, his teammate Chase Elliott's footing into the season started poorly. The #9 Chevy took a few races to reclaim its superior form. For the first six stints, Elliott could manage only a solitary top-10. However, after collecting his first top-5 at the Richmond Raceway, the #9 Chevy driver maintained contention in the following races. The 28-year-old secured a third-place finish at the Martinsville Speedway, followed by his maiden win at the Texas Motor Speedway. Since then, Elliott has significantly climbed the rankings and is keeping himself among the leaderboard toppers. As per the latest rankings released by NASCAR, Kyle Larson tops the Cup Series drivers' rankings with 561 points, followed by Elliott, who isn't far behind with 547 points. However, the #5 Chevy driver's small lead of 14 points over Chase Elliott has caught the NASCAR fanbase's attention (via X).One fan outlined Elliott nearing the 1st place on the charts."Chase is coming. Has yet to finish outside the top 20," the fan wrote."But that 9 keeps coming closer and closer to the lead," another fan concurred."We’ll look at Chase getting back up there! Man wtf is up with my man Willy B these days…" another fan added. Some fans highlighted Kyle Larson's missed Coca-Cola 600 attempt to be the reason behind the small margin."The man missed a whole race! And that race paid the MOST points 🐐," one fan commented."The reason Chase is so close in the points is because Larson missed the 600," another fan added. This fan cited both Larson and Elliott as "tough to stop.""Not even missing the Coke 600 can slow him down. He and Chase r gonna b tough to stop," the fan wrote.Kyle Larson's failed 'Double' and the following 10th-place finish in Illinois briefly dethroned him from the top spotLarson became the fifth driver to attempt the 1100-mile Indy-Charlotte Double. However, his pursuit of joining Tony Stewart, the only person to complete the doubleheader on the same day, cost him his regular season Cup Series race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.Due to inclement weather conditions, the Indy 500 kicked off 4 hours later than the slated time and wrapped up 20 minutes after the Coca-Cola 600 race took off. Thus, while Larson was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Justin Allgaier replaced the former in the #5 Chevy at Charlotte.Moving forward, the HMS driver made it to the 1.5-mile oval when the race was red-flagged on Lap 249, due to the same reason that delayed the IMS run. Kyle Larson geared up to replace Allgaier only to know that the officials canceled the race. As a result, the 2021 Cup Series champ couldn't even hit the track, let alone complete a lap. Thus, he missed the highest points-paying race on the calendar and lost his domination. Furthermore, his tenth-place finish at the World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois didn't help the HMS driver reclaim the #1 spot. However, after starting fifth at the Sonoma Raceway, Kyle Larson emerged as the Toyota / Save Mart 350 race winner and climbed back to first place in the Cup Series standings.
