NASCAR driver Chris Buescher drove down victory lane in the Go Bowling at the Glen playoff race at Watkins Glen International. This marked Buescher's first win of the 2024 Cup Series campaign.
Buescher, the former Xfinity Series champion, currently drives the #17 Ford for Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, competing full-time in the Cup Series. Over his NASCAR career, Buescher has earned 9 race wins, including 6 in the Cup Series. Additionally, he claimed the ARCA Series championship in 2012, securing 10 wins in 57 starts.
The Goodyear 400 in May was one of Chris Buescher's strongest performances this season, where he nearly claimed victory. Leading with just 10 laps remaining, Buescher's hopes were dashed when 23XI Racing's Tyler Reddick slid into him, sending Buescher into the wall and ending both drivers' chances for a win at Darlington
Following the race, the 31-year-old confronted Reddick, highlighting how he should have had the winner sticker. He said,
"It doesn't work for me. We don't have that (winner's) sticker on our door right now. You need to be better. "I don't have that sticker on my door. This means more. I need you to be better. We've raced each other just fine for so long."
However, after claiming his first victory of the season at Watkins Glen International, an elated Buecher shared a picture of him with his winning #17 Ford with the caption:
"Finally got that sticker💯"
Although Texas native Buescher missed the playoffs this season, his RFK Racing teammate Brad Keselowski is representing the team in the championship battle. Buescher currently sits 18th in the driver standings, with 13 top-ten finishes and 6 top-five finishes across 28 race starts this year.
Chris Buescher’s crew chief pinpoints turning point at Watkins Glen
Chris Buescher started the Go Bowling at the Glen playoff race in P24; however, he found himself among the frontrunners in stage 3.
Surprisingly, Buescher took the lead back from an unsteady Shane van Gisbergen, who had moved up 4 places in the final overtime restart. A chaotic closing stage at Watkins Glen earned Buescher his first win of the season.
After the race, crew chief Scott Graves explained the key moments leading to the #17 team's victory, saying (via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on X),
"Throughout the whole race, we were able to work our way forward, just, you know, with strategy side of it, and obviously the chase guy's going for points that kind of helped us get the position, but I knew we had a really good car from practice. [...] I think it was about the point that he passed the #34, we were like, all right, we know we got something here."
"And it really just came down to that last pit cycle, getting the track position for the end of the race. And then at that point, you just got to hang onto it. So that's, and that's exactly what he did there for the end of the race," he added.
Buescher's RFK teammate and playoff contender, Brad Keselowski, ended the race with a disappointing P26 finish.
