Christopher Bell shared a cryptic message on social media amid the Chevrolet controversy at Martinsville last week. William Byron was allegedly helped by other drivers to make it to the last Championship 4 spot.
NASCAR is headed towards the Championship race in Phoenix next week. Reigning champion Ryan Blaney won the Xfinity 500 to lock his spot. Meanwhile, William Byron in the #24 Chevy finished in sixth place to take the last spot of the contenders.
However, there was more to Byron's victory. Allegedly, fellow Chevy drivers Ross Chastain and Austin Dillon parked themselves behind the #24, not passing him, and neither did they let anyone pass them either. This gave him the minimum finishing position to qualify for the final spot of the Championship 4.
Denny Hamlin also called this out on his Actions Detrimental podcast, saying:
"If everything played out natural between the other cars, the 24 is out." Hamlin said. "The other cars were just parked behind him."
Following the end of the race, Christopher Bell shared a cryptic message on social media with a picture of himself and his team's owner Joe Gibbs. He wrote:
"Just a couple guys missing a bow tie"
This was likely targeted towards the Chevrolet drivers who blocked other drivers to get ahead of William Byron.
"I don't know what to say": Christopher Bell after being eliminated from the playoffs
As the race came to a close, Christopher Bell had the opportunity to get ahead of Bubba Wallace. While he did manage to put his car ahead of the #23, he seemingly hit the wall and "rode" it, similar to what Ross Chastain did in 2022. He finished the race in 18th place and was tied with Byron. However, since NASCAR has banned the maneuver, he was pushed out of playoffs.
Reacting to the decision, Bell was left speechless.
"I don't know what to say, you know. I don't know I don't know what to say."
He further claimed that his move was different from Ross Chastain's in 2022 (which potentially led to the creation of this rule). He stated that he got ahead of Wallace but got loose and hit the wall, not intending to ride it.
"I understand that the rule was made to prevent people from riding the wall but my move was completely different than what Ross's was," claimed Christopher Bell. "I got loose getting into the corner and slid right into the fence so uh yeah I mean I don't know I don't know what else to say."
NASCAR penalized him for the move and was taken out of the playoffs and hence out of contention for the Cup Series Championship.
