Joey Logano recently opened up on the major turning point of his 2024 season. Logano, who won his third Cup Series championship earlier this month at Phoenix, wasn't considered a championship favorite until the playoffs began.
This is because the Team Penske driver had just one win to his name in the regular season. But as the playoffs rolled around, Joey Logano and the #22 team turned it up a notch and dominated the rounds, winning three more races, and the biggest prize at the end.
Speaking about what changed for the #22 team later in the season, Joey Logano mentioned the tire test at North Wilkesboro Speedway. He claimed that because the teams don't get as many tests in the modern era anymore when one gets it, they have to 'get after it.'
Logano revealed that the #22 team learned a lot of solid things from that test which ended up benefitting them later in the season. He described:
"We got the speed back, getting closer every week, getting where we needed to be, playoffs started to roll around, things started to get good. But what our team I feel like did the best this year was we took advantage of every opportunity that came our way. And I know opportunities are hard to come by and everybody gets the opportunities, it's just as hard to take advantage of an opportunity when it's sitting in front of you. Are you ready when the thing is staring at you in the face to take advantage of that?"
Joey Logano recalled that looking back at Nashville, he took advantage of the five overtimes. At Las Vegas, there was the opportunity to make it on fuel mileage, which they took and booked a spot in the Championship 4 two weeks ahead of the other three drivers.
"It seemed like just everything went right at the end of the year and it is so crazy to me because everything went wrong in the first half. And the last four races, we couldn't do anything wrong ... like you can't draw that up any better, just everything went perfect," Logano added.
Joey Logano has suggestions for the NASCAR format but warns against losing a key element
Since Joey Logano's third Cup Series win, the format of the championship became a hot topic of discussion in the NASCAR community. Many insiders and fans have wondered if the format needs changing, considering a driver who didn't perform relatively well in the regular season ended up winning the title at the end.
Addressing whether the format needs changing or not, Joey Logano said that the only thing he would 'even remotely think about a little bit' would be to introduce a two-race final instead of the single race at Phoenix. Having said that, Logano mentioned that such a change would take away a big feeling about the existing format.
"I can talk myself right out of that, because you have the big moment, like right there in the championship race, like everybody's right there. It had that Super Bowl feeling, and spreading that over two weeks wouldn't be as special," Logano said.
With that said, Joey Logano saw the whole subject from a fan's perspective, pointing to the Xfinity Series and Truck Series finales, where he claimed he wouldn't change anything.
