NASCAR, the premier stock car racing league, has been rocked by an 'intellectual property theft' scandal recently. NASCAR insider Parker Kligerman spoke about the Joe Gibbs Racing engineer who allegedly leaked crucial data to rival teams on a recent episode of the Rubbin Is Racing podcast.
As reported by the Associated Press reporter Jenna Fryer, an engineer under contract with JGR has been involved in sharing proprietary information to one of the rival teams in the Cup Seriers. An AP report alleges that this information was likely sold to one of the non-playoffs team. This happens to be similar to the Ferrari's Spygate scandal of 2007 that shocked the Formula 1 world. However, with no official complaint yet, NASCAR is unable to act on this critical issue.
Sharing his opinion on the Rubbin Is Racing podcast, NASCAR analyst Kligerman claims that fingers are being pointed at teams like Richard Childress Racing and Front Row Motorsports after they suddenly got a performance boost in the 2024 season.
"Nascar has been made aware of an ongoing scandal going on revolving around an engineer selling information to a rival organization per the Associated Press. The AP newswire the main point spoken on by Executives is that a team without any cars in the playoffs paid a JGR engineer that is in a contract year for setup information. NASCAR says it cannot do anything about the situation until a lawsuit is filed, but also acknowledge to AP that has heard that one team with no car in the playoffs paid the engineer in cash for exchange for setup information," Kligerman said. "So the fingers being pointed at RCR and Front Row (Motorsports) right now, you know, because they know people in the playoffs and they've gotten incrementally better. So I'm intrigued, I love the spy game. So this is this is right in my wheelhouse," he added. (13:56 onwards)
