Kyle Larson came home fifth following Sunday’s (June 8) race at Michigan International Speedway. He fell short of logging that long-awaited victory for Hendrick Motorsports at the Brooklyn-based, D-shaped oval, and later, detailed more on what went wrong.
Throughout the 300-lap event, several drivers, including Kaulig Racing’s Ty Dillon, were found driving with their eyes on the mirror. And that’s what got Larson into a run-in with Dillon.
Reflecting on the incident during his post-race interview with Frontstretch, the Elk Grove native said (1:10):
“I was just kind of fed up with him at that point. He was just mirror driving, so I was just over it… It's just tough to pass, so whatever.”
Fifteen races in, Kyle Larson sits second in the championship standings with 535 points. On the other hand, Ty Dillon and Denny Hamlin are 30th and third, respectively. Larson’s teammate William Byron tops the leaderboard with 576 points.
NASCAR Hall of Famer says William Byron has surpassed Kyle Larson at Hendrick Motorsports
Recently, on Prime Video’s post-race show at Michigan, Dale Earnhardt Jr. said that William Byron has surpassed Kyle Larson as the top dog at Hendrick Motorsports. Currently, Byron is ahead of Larson and Denny Hamlin by 41 and 82 points, respectively.
“Yeah, the last couple of weeks, I think that he’s [Byron] eclipsed Larson as the best car at Hendrick Motorsports,” Dale Jr. explained his view. “Nobody’s really been able to say that for a long time. Larson was so good throughout the majority of this season, but he’s stumbled and kind of been kind of neutralized a little bit over the last couple of weeks.”
Kyle Larson does have more wins than William Byron. However, Larson has struggled in recent weeks, namely at Charlotte and Nashville. According to Dale Earnhardt Jr., who is a two-time NASCAR champion himself, Byron must capitalize on the same.
“Byron needs to take advantage of that and try to go out there and get his wins. He’s got a really good shot to separate himself from that pack and put himself in a championship contender form,” he added.
Next up for the drivers is the Viva Mexico 250 at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The race has been scheduled for Sunday, June 15, and will be televised on Prime Video, starting at 3 p.m. ET, with live radio updates on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
