Chase Elliott raced against his dad, Bill Elliott, during the 2021 SRX Series finale at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway three years ago. The father-son duo are one-time NASCAR Cup Series champions and have only raced against each other twice. They first competed during an Alabama Pro Late Model race at South Alabama Speedway in 2013.
Elliott shared an inside look at the race day in July 2021 and wrote:
"I got to compete in the last SRX race of the season, and even better I got to do it with my Dad. I made memories I'll cherish forever."
Chase started racing at the 0.6-mile short track in Nashville at 13 but his first win came in 2013 when he won the Alabama Pro 125 Late Model race.
However, Bill’s experience at Nashville goes back to his Cup Series days, where he raced seven times and had one top-ten finish. Bill won the championship in 1988 and has 44 Cup wins.
"We haven't had a chance to race against each other much over the years. I have no question that we both want to beat each other. ... Just to be able to share the same (type) of car. I'm curious to see what my comments are versus his," Chase said in a post-race interview.
The race also included other famous drivers like Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte. Chase won the race, with Tony Stewart finishing second and Bill in third.
"I still think we should be at the Fairgrounds" - Chase Elliott on adding Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway to the Cup Series
Chase Elliott has raced at the Nashville Superspeedway and won the Cup Series race at the track in 2022 but he prefers the fairgrounds. The Hendrick Motorsports driver said that he wants NASCAR to return to the historic fairgrounds, where his dad also raced.
In June 2024, he recommended adding the track to the Cup Series and said:
"The racing has been better here in this car than the old car for sure. I still think we should be at the Fairgrounds. If we were going to have two dates in a city, I think this would be the one to do it in. You could have one here and one (at the Fairgrounds). That would be totally fine. This track has put on good races the last three trips."
Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway hosted the Cup race between 1958 to 1984. However, the track, which opened in 1904, needs repairs to host NASCAR again.
