Martin Truex Jr. recently addressed whether he has left NASCAR with any regrets. Ahead of the recent awards night in Charlotte, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver shared his thoughts on his career after making his debut as a full-time driver in 2006.
After a career that spanned nearly two decades, he decided to retire at the end of the 2024 season, having won the 2018 Cup championship and 34 races. During a media interaction on Sunday, Truex Jr. was asked if he'd miss something now that his days as a full-time driver have come to an end, Martin Truex Jr. said:
"I am content," Truex Jr. said. "I am content, I am happy, I am excited about the future. I don't have any regrets. I wish I won more races. But who doesn't? I feel great about it and I'm excited about the future, I still get to come around, have some fun, ask why people why they suck, why they're not winning, what's wrong with your car, what's wrong with your team, why aren't things going right, it'd be fun." During the same media interaction, Martin Truex Jr. remarked that he earned every win he got, and never had to resort to any 'dirty' tactics to clinch the victories. Martin Truex Jr. said that while he was proud of his 2017 Cup championship, he took pride in his 'consistent' record in stock car racing, saying:
"More than that, the amount of starts, never missing a race, and never getting hurt, just always being there and giving it my all, never letting up, and that's kind of why I'm here. It's time to let off the gas a little bit. I've been going with all I have for over 20 years, just giving it everything every single day. So, I guess that, just staying around, winning races for over a long period of time, and having a dominant season in Cup Series is something I'll never forget." [1:50]
Martin Truex Jr. 'not sure' of his plans after retirement from NASCAR
With two races left in his final season as a full-timer, Martin Truex Jr. was asked about his retirement plans. But in typical Truex style, he disclosed that he wasn't sure of any plans, except for a couple of things. Speaking to Bob Pockrass on November 5 after the Cup series race in Martinsville Speedway, Jr. said:
"I'm not sure yet. Hunt and fish. Enjoy life. I'm sure I'll watch some racing still, probably won't be as closely interested in it as I am now. But I don't know. We'll see. Time will tell," he said.
While the JGR veteran was given a fitting farewell for his long and illustrious career, his final season as a full-timer was one without a win. Addressing this after Phoenix, Truex's crew chief James Small deemed a lot of it to be 'circumstantial'.
Small pointed to the #19 facing unforeseen issues at tracks like New Hampshire, Las Vegas, Indy, Pocono, and Darlington.
