Former NASCAR Cup Series driver Rick Hendrick's team, Hendrick Motorsports, is in a tricky situation. All of their drivers are in the round of eight, but none have as yet punched their ticket to the Championship 4 race scheduled for November 10, 2024, at the Phoneix Raceway.

Recently, former Hendrick Motorsports crew chief and NASCAR analyst Steve Letarte was featured in an interview on the Dirty Mo Dough channel expressing his views on Rick Hendrick's team's current situation. The host highlighted that this is the first time none of the HMS drivers might advance to the final race.

Letarte opined that it "would be a bad day" for Rick Hendick's team. The host further asked the former HMS crew chief about the team's strategy for the last race of the Round of 8. The NASCAR analyst replied that "internal competition" was not a negative and was by design. He said,

"Their strategy is when they load them up, 'good luck, boys, we're gonna see which one of you guys make it.' Like, there is none of that. So, like, let me talk about Hendrick, because we hear this on a lot of our calls like it's a negative, you know, 'there's a lot of internal conversation over there and a lot of internal competition,' you know. Yeah, yeah, that's how it should be. It's by design" [00:13].

HMS driver William Byron currently ranks fourth in the playoff standings, followed by Kyle Larson in fifth place and Chase Elliott in the last position.

Larson this week shared his take on Hendrick Motorsports' tricky situation.

Rick Hendrick's HMS driver Kyle Larson addresses the tricky situation with teammate Willam Byron

Kyle Larson and William Byrn are Rick Hendrick's two hopes for the Championship 4 round. Both drivers will be looking to lock their spot in the next round by winning the Xfinity 500 scheduled for November 3, 2024, at the Martinsville Speedway, but only one driver will advance.

The two HMS drivers are not far apart in the playoff standings. Byron ranks fourth with a seven-point buffer, and Larson is in fifth place, requiring eight points to qualify as one of the top four drivers.

Larson, speaking to NASCAR reporter Steven Taranto, gave his take on the situation:

"Yeah, I mean, William and I both aren't in the shop every day, so I don't know what the dynamics been, but I imagine it's been the same as it is every week. You know, the teams work really well together, and I think all four teams understand that the closer we can all work together, the better opportunity each have to win" (1:03).

He added,

So I'm sure nothing like that has been different. Competition meetings, all that drivers are communicating. Well, we'll have a debrief here after qualifying later on today, it'll be the same thing. So business as usual."

Kyle Larson concluded with the comment that Rick Hendrick would love to get at least two of the three drivers to advance to the next round. But as things stand, either Larson or Byron will be punching his ticket for the Championship 4 race on November 4, 2024.
