Homeboy Daniel Suarez achieved an emotional and significant moment in his career on Saturday, winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at his home track. The 33-year-old driver suffered a crash during the race qualifying session earlier in the day but made a strong comeback from the back. Suarez is the only Mexican driver in the NASCAR Cup Series grid at the moment and is all set to take part in the Viva Mexico 250 race on Sunday (June 15).
Suarez expressed his feelings after the experience he had during the race in Mexico. He shared how special this race is for him and the intensity of the fans around.
"In more than 20 years of my career, I have never experienced what I experienced today. When I took the lead, I was able to hear the people like they were right here, especially not just in the stadium. The stadium was huge, but also in corners one, two and three. It was unbelievable. I got goosebumps, and I felt, I felt so blessed... And then I had to really talk to myself and say, Hey, Daniel, focus. Don't get distracted, because it's so much people," Daniel Suarez said via FOX NASCAR.
The Trackhouse Racing driver is all set for his home race on Sunday. He starts tenth on the grid during the main race and would look to convert this into a memorable performance at the Cup Series' first points race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez track. Daniel Suarez would be hyped and full of confidence going into the historic race after securing a hard-earned Xfinity Series win on Saturday at the same track.
'I feel really a fish in the water': Daniel Suarez expresses his emotions before the Cup Series race in Mexico
Daniel Suarez is the local hero ahead of the Viva Mexico 250 race scheduled for Sunday. The 33-year-old driver is attracting a lot of attention because of being the only Mexican driver on the grid for the race. Suarez will run a special helmet during the race, celebrating the occasion.
The Trackhouse Racing driver shared his experience of his weekend ahead of the big race, and how the love he is receiving has exceeded his expectations.
"I've been living a dream. That's exactly what has been happening for me the last few days. I feel very blessed, very happy to be here racing in front of you guys. I feel that finally I was able to drive the car, not just talk about it. I feel really a fish in the water. Hopefully, I will just continue to have fun and continue to enjoy this moment. We're making history right now together. Not just NASCAR, not just me, but the entire country of Mexico," Suarez told the media.
The driver believes that this moment is important for NASCAR to diversify the sport and encourage more drivers from other nations. The Mexican driver is currently ranked 28th in the NASCAR Cup Series and hopes for a strong performance over his home weekend.
