Martin Truex Jr.’s second career championship hopes in his final full-time season ended after being eliminated from the playoffs. He missed the NASCAR Round of 12's playoffs cut line by 21 points. Former NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick recently shared his opinion on Truex Jr.’s playoff exit. The 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion Truex Jr. has been unsure about his racing future in NASCAR in the last couple of years. Every year seemed to be his last, until this year when it was announced that the veteran will retire from full-time racing at Cup level by the end of the 2024 season.Harvick feels that this uncertainty of whether to fully retire or continue racing impacted Truex Jr.’s performance, and that resulted in a playoff exit. Harvick also mentioned that #19 Joe Gibbs Racing team’s crew chief, James Small, had been frustrated with Truex Jr.’s commitment issues. On the latest episode of the “Happy Hour” podcast, Harvick spoke about Martin Truex Jr.’s playoff exit and said:“I saw a video on social media with James Small, just going right into Michael from the upper management side of things at Joe Gibbs Racing. We saw the crew member trying to protect that conversation. I think James is frustrated with that one foot in, one-foot-out commitment that Martin has had. Do I retire? Do I not retire? I'll come back…It's gone the exact same way the last two years. You cannot race this car with the one foot in, one foot out commitment because there's a workload that is required to go with this car on a week-to-week basis.”Kevin Harvick questions Martin Truex Jr.’s engagement after pit road penalty at Bristol Joe Gibbs Racing veteran was running second behind Kyle Larson but made a speeding penalty on Lap 333 during the pit stop that affected his chances of advancing into the second round of playoffs. It dropped him to 26th spot for the final restart on the grid.Afterwards, the most surprising thing was that Martin Truex Jr. couldn't recover and pass a single car after the pit stop.In the aforementioned podcast, Harvick questions Truex Jr.’s engagement, pointing out that even though mistakes happen, it's unusual that a car in second place wasn’t able to make any gains.“I think when you look at the race, Martin was running second, made a mistake on pit road. That happens. But you can't tell me that the second place car couldn't pass one car after the pit stop. So you have to feel for those guys.I think that some of James's frustration from the crew chief side of it is, was my driver fully engaged to go do what I needed to do. And Martin kind of said it last week. I'm frustrated, don't really like what I'm doing, happy it's almost over,” Harvick added. With seven races left in the season, Martin Truex Jr. will look to finish with at least one win in his final season.
