NASCAR slapped Chase Elliott and Brad Keselowski with penalties for "blend-line" violations during the race. Nonetheless, Senior official Elton Sawyer later stated that additional information was provided to the drivers, indicating that the blend-line issue wasn't their fault.

The incident happened on Lap 25 when Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson pitted under green. As they left the pit road, both cars entered the acceleration lane. Between Turns 1 and 2, Elliott's car strayed from the acceleration lane, crossing over two painted white lines and placing all four tires onto the racing surface. Following Elliott, Larson also deviated from the lane but only slightly; he crossed the first white line and placed only his right-side tires on the second white line, which NASCAR did not consider a violation of being on the racing surface.

Brad Keselowski also took a creative approach for his way back through the field. However, his gamble didn't pay off as he ran out of fuel while leading in overtime. On Tuesday, Elton Sawyer, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition, discussed the penalties during an interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. He explained:

"As you look at the video, it basically says that you have to stay in the acceleration lane as you’re exiting until you exit turn 2 and then you blend up on the racetrack. Brad Moron and Wayne Alton both send additional language to clarify any confusion that may have come of the videos that at no point could you go up on the racing surface."

"So we felt that we were in a pretty good place.Obviously, communication is something that we pride ourselves on, and want to make sure our teams and drivers all understand, our fans understand, any nuances, if you will, around a particular venue that is different. We didn’t get a lot of questions back on the information that went out to the teams, so we felt like we were in a pretty good place."

Brad Keselowski and Chase Elliott were frustrated with NASCAR's ruling

At Indianapolis, Brad Keselowski was stunned to find himself penalized. After he and Chase Elliott got incensed by the “blend-line violation” penalties, Keselowski expressed his confusion, saying that he didn't understand, what the penalty was for.

He also mentioned that NASCAR did not provide any information in the email about warranting a penalty. Keselowski asked his team to go over the rule with him again to ensure he fully grasped it. He pointed out a fundamental disconnect, stating, there’s one side at fault here:

"Either I don’t know how to read, or they don’t know how to officiate — one of the two," on the radio.

On the other side, Chase Elliott also didn't mince words about his displeasure with NASCAR's decision, expressing his frustration. He stated:

"That’s not right. I did exactly what the f***ing sheet said to do. [...] I mean what the f***?! … I do exactly what they f***ing tell us to do. They didn’t say line, they said racing surface, so you tell me how the f*** I was on the racing surface."

Both Brad Keselowski and Chase Elliott had challenging races, ultimately finishing the Brickyard 400 in 21st and tenth places, respectively. While Elliott is currently second in the Cup Series standings with 739 points, Keselowski is ninth with 615 points.
