Following the three-race suspension for Austin Dillon's spotter, veteran Brett Griffin is set to take over the role of the spotter for the #3 Richard Childress Racing car for the remaining three weeks. Meanwhile, RCR announced their plan to appeal the penalties sanctioned by NASCAR following Dillon's controversial win at Richmond.
The Cook Out 400 witnessed Dillon snapping his 68-race winless streak, which came after the #3 driver wrecked two fellow competitors on the race's final lap. As a result, NASCAR's sanctioning body stripped the 34-year-old of his entry into the 2024 playoff rounds. Dillon was also docked 25 driver and owner points.
Dillon's spotter Brandon Benesch was also penalized with a three-race suspension after radioing, "Down low, wreck him" when Dillon nudged Joey Logano from the rear and then made contact with Denny Hamlin.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), veteran spotter Brett Griffin officially confirmed that he was replacing Benesch as the spotter for the RCR team for the remaining three regular-season races. Griffin wrote:
"Some are gonna be happy about this and some are gonna whine like little bi**hes. Happy to help the 3 guys the next 3 weeks along with Jesse Love and his team. Let’s go win one, boys."
Benesch also served as the spotter for Jesse Love, who drives the #2 Chevrolet full-time for RCR in the Xfinity Series. With Benesch's suspension, Griffin, a co-host of the Dirty Mo Media podcast, will spot for Love and Dillon during the NASCAR weekend at Michigan International Speedway.
"He wrecked two biggest a**holes in the sport" - Brett Griffin on Austin Dillon's controversial win at Richmond
Austin Dillon was under the scanner and subsequently penalized by NASCAR's sanctioning body following the final lap incident at Richmond Raceway. The RCR driver wrecked two fellow Cup Series drivers to take the checkered flag
In a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Brett Griffin shared his take on the final lap incident and claimed that Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin have also previously wrecked their way through to win. Griffin said:
"The three biggest heels in our sport, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano. Kyle Busch has gone somewhat quiet. They're arrogant a**holes. They wreck a lot of people to win."
"How many times has Denny used people up to win? How many times has Joey Logano used people up to win? Listen, I like both these guys personally. They're both good dudes. But he wrecked two biggest a**holes in the sport," Griffin added.
Griffin hasn't been a full-time spotter in recent years, however, he has been the spotter for the #33 RCR's part-time entry in NASCAR. He achieved the season's best finish with Ty Dillon during the Brickyard 400 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
As NASCAR gears up for the Michigan weekend schedule, let's see how well the new partnership of #3 Dillon and Griffin performs.
