Ty Gibbs spoke about the importance of staying resilient and optimistic, regardless of the results and difficult race scenarios. Gibbs thought he was on his way to his first NASCAR Cup Series win in Mexico City when the caution lights came on, dashing those hopes late in the race.
Gibbs had assumed the lead when Shane van Gisbergen made a green flag pit stop on lap 64, but Joe Gibbs Racing left him on the track one lap too long. It was during Gibbs' final lap (under green) of his last pit stop that Carson Hocevar spun out, bringing out the caution. Gibbs, along with several other contenders who pitted under yellow, lost significant track position to the cars that already pitted under green.
After getting back to green, Gibbs climbed into the top 10 but was unable to advance any further and had to settle for a hard-fought 11th place finish. After leading the race for 20 laps and clearly one of the fastest cars all day, Gibbs was very impressive at the Mexico City track, but wasn't able to challenge van Gisbergen.
"Sometimes life just doesn't work out for you, sometimes things don't work out for you, and you just gotta keep digging. We’ll keep digging and take what we got. We had a fast race car and didn’t win, but sometimes, it just happens," Ty Gibbs said in a video shared by journalist Matt Weaver on X.
Ty Gibbs is a highly touted talent in stock car motorsport, currently competing in the Cup Series with the #54 Joe Gibbs Racing team. The 22-year-old started his career with a bang in the ARCA Menards Series and won the championship in 2021 with 10 wins in 20 races and top fives in all the events.
Gibbs won the 2022 Xfinity Series championship, with seven wins in 33 starts. He is currently 24th in the Cup Series standings.
Ty Gibbs lamented P3 finish at Michigan as JGR teammate Denny Hamlin claimed victory
Ty Gibbs finished third in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway but was left frustrated, feeling that he had the speed to win. Starting from eighth, Gibbs struggled early, but improved significantly in the final segment, running third for much of the closing laps.
However, fuel strategy forced him to conserve rather than push for the lead, and he ultimately had to yield to his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin, who claimed his third win of the season.
"Wish we could have got one," Gibbs said during his post-race interview. "That was not the option with the fuel spot from where we were in. Just very unfortunate. It's just unfortunate, because I feel like we had the capability to go do it. I feel like we showed we were fast enough to go do it. It's definitely frustrating, but it's just part of it sometimes."
"I think a win is more important than third, it's good to have a good finish, for sure. Good to have a good day, a good comeback. We started off just very horrible. Glad we could come back and got better. Thanks to my team for sticking behind me," he added.
Chris Buescher finished second, while Ty Gibbs remains winless in the Cup Series despite his strong performances.
