Jimmie Johnson is gearing up for the 11th Cup Series race on the 2024 NASCAR calendar and his third this season, scheduled to flag off tomorrow. 37 Cup drivers will be seen battling for the top spot at the Dover Motor Speedway, fielding their NextGen cars.

The 7-time Cup Series winner is the winningest driver on the track, with 11 wins to his name. Amid his return to Dover for the Wurth 400, his decades-old skillful save from being smashed into the barriers on the same asphalt has resurfaced.

During the 2006 MBNA 400 "A Salute to Heroes" race held on June 6, the then HMS driver's #48 Chevrolet spun vehemently on the track, drifting from the top corner to the bottom. However, Johnson prevented his Chevy from getting slammed into the barriers, and his sheer prowess was applauded by Jeff Gordon.

Johnson retired from full-time duty for Hendrick Motorsports in 2020 and now competes part-time for his co-owned unit Legacy Motor Club. This season, the Californian has competed in two races: the Daytona 500 and the Texas Motor Speedway.

The current season is yet to see the legendary driver churn a promising output after a horrendous P28 and P29 at the Daytona International Speedway and in Texas, respectively. However, being the most successful driver at the Delaware-based asphalt, Johnson could produce a good result tomorrow.

NASCAR fanbase reacts to Jimmie Johnson's upcoming Dover run

The 7x Cup Series champion called off his full-time run in 2020 but has been on a part-time schedule to stay in touch with the sport and probably clinch his eighth Cup Series title. The veteran's last win came on the same asphalt in 2017, and since then, he's thirsty for another win in his arsenal and hence, his third appearance in Dover.

Jimmie Johnson will field his #84 Toyota for LMC, which is the only non-charter entry in the 11th Cup Series weekend. The Californian shared a clip of his Dover win as he prepped up for another banger. Ahead of his run, the NASCAR fanbase has opined, pouring in a mixed bag of reactions.

One fan was seemingly unhappy with the revelation and commented:

"You may wanna lower your expectations! #NASCAR"

Another fan expressed their love for Jimmie Johnson but asked the legend to keep his expectations low, writing:

"I absolutely love you Jimmie… but I think you should lower your expectations juuuuuuust a bit"

This fan took a jibe at the LMC driver's subpar footing into the season and added:

"Incoming 28th place finish."

Another fan lauded Jimmie Johnson for his reign of supremacy at Dover, writing:

"Dude you owned Dover and New Hampshire. It was like guaranteed wins when you went."

Another fan penned down a rather big note encouraging the Cup Series champ for having guts:

"Good Luck Jimmie. What u r doing w/ that program takes guts, determination & dedication. U have all that. It takes time. People expect U 2 win overnight. With mega teams & unlimited budgets that’s tough. Erik was up front… until… u r getting there! Hang in! U will get there!"
