The New York Giants are a mess but what can they do about it?

Los Angeles Rams v New York Giants
Is Manning the real problem?

The New York Giants were supposed to be in contention for a spot in the Super Bowl this season. Instead, they are off to an abysmal 1-7 start and it seems like the season is already over despite eight games remaining on the schedule.

The Giants were annihilated by the Rams 51-17 and the third-and-33 play that led to a Rams touchdown basically describes the Giants' season in a nutshell.

After the game was over, Giants coach Ben McAdoo opened up to the possibility of benching Eli Manning and starting Davis Webb. Manning does not want to be benched and this can turn real ugly if McAdoo decides to go this route.

Manning isn't the problem with the Giants this season though. McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese are the biggest problems with this football team. Reese drafted poorly and did not address the offensive line issues in the offseason. Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart are horrendous, to say the least.

The Giants have some good players, but does the main problem lie in the team's coaching or do they actually need football players? Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall, Olivier Vernon, B.J. Goodson, Weston Richburg, and Romeo Okwara have missed games this season due to injury while Beckham Jr., Marshall, Richburg, and Okwara are currently on the Injured Reserve list.

It doesn't matter if some key players are on injured reserve or not. What matters is that McAdoo has lost the locker room and it seems like some players have quit on him. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Janrois Jenkins were suspended this season for a game by McAdoo for a violation of team rules.

What do the Giants have to do to fix this mess? They have to fire McAdoo and Reese at the end of the season. They need a coach that will control Odell Beckham Jr.'s antics and punish every player fairly. Moreover, the general manager needs to learn how to draft better football players.

Ereck Flowers and Eli Apple have been first-round busts for the Giants. They both shouldn't be on the roster next season. If Davis Webb impresses during his starts for the Giants, they should trade Manning because he will want to start somewhere else. The Giants could trade him to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a second-round pick.

Rodgers-Cromartie has one more year left on his contract and if the Giants feel like they need to rebuild, they should trade him to the Tennessee Titans for a first-round pick.

Speaking of draft picks, the Giants will most likely have a top three pick in the NFL Draft. They have a total of seven picks currently and if they trade Manning and Rodgers-Cromartie, they would have nine picks. I would hire a general manager who drafts well overall, possibly someone from Pittsburgh or New England's front office.

If the Giants feel that Marshall and Beckham Jr. won't work together next season, the former could be trade bait as well. Marshall needs to go to a team that is win-now mode and a team like the Baltimore Ravens or the Seattle Seahawks could use him wisely. Baltimore desperately needs a big target for Joe Flacco and the Ravens could give up two draft picks for him, possibly a second-round pick this year and a third-round pick next year. Seattle would probably give up a first-round pick this year and a fourth-round pick next year.

These potential trades make the Giants' draft-pick pool a little bit deeper. I am not saying that this is all going to happen but if this were to happen, it would be very interesting for the Giants' future. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys have young talent in place for the future and that is what the Giants need.
