Why the Davante Adams Contract is a Big Deal for the Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers v Dallas Cowboys

Just a couple of years ago, I thought Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams wasn't even going to make the team. Now, he has clearly emerged as the Packers' number one receiver. Because of that, he was given a 4-year, $58 million dollar contract extension by the Green Bay Packers.

Adams would have been an unrestricted free agent after this season and the Packers don't have to worry about giving him a contract now. Adams is only 25 years old and is about to enter the prime of his career. He has caught 74 passes for 885 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns.

He is a legitimate outside threat for Green Bay and Adams can also be dangerous in the slot as well. He goes up for passes well. When Aaron Rodgers went down with a collarbone injury in week six, Adams was by far the Packers best receiver for Brett Hundley. He had 41 receptions 489 yards and four touchdowns after week six thru 14.

Those numbers prove that he can play with other quarterbacks other than Aaron Rodgers. With the Adams contract extension, this means that Jordy Nelson and/or Randall Cobb may be on there way out.

Nelson is 32 years old and it seems like he lost his step. He has caught 53 passes for 482 yards receiving and six touchdowns this season. Nelson had six touchdowns for the first five weeks of the season and hasn't had one since. Since weeks six until now, Nelson has caught 34 passes for 252 yards receiving. Nelson technically could come back next season, but there is a possible buyout in his contract. It seems like he has lost confidence in his game.

Randall Cobb has caught 62 passes for 608 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Cobb is more of a slot receiver and he isn't known for playing on the outside. Cobb is 27 years old and he technically can come back next season, but he also has a buyout in his contract as well.

I don't see the Packers bringing both of them back next season. If for some reason they didn't bring back both, the other wide receivers currently on the roster are Geronimo Allison, Trevor Davis, Jeff Janis, and Michael Clark. They would have to draft another wide receiver or sign one.

The Packers made the right move signing Davante Adams to a contract extension and it will pay off in the long run for them.
