We may never know exactly what happened backstage, but Michael's release on the series is easier to explain. The idea behind the spin-off created by the screenwriters was that a copy machine would break in The Office and then it's called back, repaired, and shipped to Pawnee, Indiana, the Parks and Recreation set. A spin-off of the series was offered in 2008, with a pilot episode scheduled to make its debut as an introductory program to the SuperBowl in 2009. In addition, actress Rashida Jones had to play a different character in both, which was problematic for the potential fallout. However, The Office's creative team decided instead to create Parks and Recreation as a stand-alone series.

Another spin-off featuring Rainn Wilson in the role of Dwight Schrute operating a guest house and beet farm, The Farm, was proposed at the beginning of 2012. Nevertheless, in October 2012, NBC decided not to proceed with the series.
