Her Australian mom, June, was a real estate developer and professor, and her American father, Robert, was a First Master of the American Navy who became Director of Advertising. Robert died of a heart attack, leaving the mother to raise the family, while Blanchett was 10 years old. Blanchett is the second of three children, with one older sibling and one younger sibling. Her forefathers have English, Scottish and French roots as well.

When she was growing up, she studied at the Australian National Institute of Drama. After graduating in 1992, she rapidly gained positions with the Sydney Theater Company. She won the Sydney Theatre Critics Circle Newcomer Award in 1993 for her participation in Kafka Dances.
