Hunter × Hunter, both in its anime episodes and manga chapters, is structured into various story arcs, each featuring a consecutive set of episodes or chapters that revolve around a specific storyline within the main plot. As of now, there are officially eight story arcs, with an unofficial ninth arc also recognized by fans.

Hunter Exam Arc

Hunter × Hunter's initial story arc is the Hunter Exam arc, where the journey of the protagonist, Gon Freecss, begins. To become a Hunter, Gon faces a series of peculiar and dangerous tests. These tests include navigating through a deadly jungle, hunting other applicants, slaying a wild boar, enduring an extraordinarily long underground marathon, and showcasing his culinary skills by making sushi.

Throughout the Hunter Exam, Gon forms friendships with three other applicants: Kurapika, Killua, and Leorio. Amongst the applicants, Gon also encounters the first antagonist, a complex and enigmatic villain named Hisoka. Hisoka uses playing cards as weapons and takes an interest in Gon, seeing him as a potential challenge to be defeated in the future.

Meanwhile, Gon's newfound friend, Killua, faces a personal challenge during the exam when his brother, Illumi, compels him to abandon the exam and return home prematurely.

The Hunter Exam arc is covered in both the 1999 and 2011 anime adaptations as well as the manga. The 1999 anime version spans 38 chapters and 31 episodes, while the 2011 anime adaptation covers 38 chapters as well but is condensed into 21 episodes.

Greed Island Arc

The Greed Island arc follows Gon and Killua's adventures after they reunite with their friends and help Kurapika during his recovery from the confrontation with the Phantom Troupe. With Leorio and Kurapika leaving again, the focus shifts back to Gon and Killua. The two boys have the opportunity to join a team hired by a wealthy billionaire named Battera to play the game "Greed Island."

Inside the game, they encounter a mysterious 57-year-old woman named Biscuit Krueger, who appears to be a 12-year-old girl. Biscuit is a Nen master and experienced teacher who provides Nen training to both Gon and Killua. As they progress through the game, they encounter challenges, including a dangerous player known as the Bomber, who poses a threat to other participants. Gon, Killua, and Biscuit team up with other players to confront and defeat the Bomber.

Amid their adventures in Greed Island, the Phantom Troupe also becomes aware of the game's significance and travels there to find a Nen-remover, which could help them nullify the Nen blade placed on their leader, Chrollo Lucilfer, by Kurapika.

Election Arc

The "13th Hunter Chairman Election" arc takes place after the Chimera Ant arc and centers around the selection of the new Hunter Chairman following Netero's death. Netero, the previous chairman, passed away after his intense battle with the Chimera Ant King, Meruem.

The Zodiacs, a group of influential Hunters, gather to organize the new election for the Hunter Chairman. Ging Freecss, one of the Zodiac members and the father of Gon, plays a prominent role in leading the establishment of the election process. Leorio, a close friend of Gon and Killua, returns and becomes a significant candidate in the election.

Amidst the political intrigue surrounding the chairman election, Killua and his loyal servants seek to use Alluka Zoldyck's Nen ability to revive a hospitalized Gon. Alluka possesses extraordinary powers, but using them comes with dangerous consequences. Illumi, Killua's brother, with the aid of Hisoka, attempts to stop Killua, fearing the potential risks associated with Alluka's abilities.

The arc explores the complexities of Nen abilities, the dynamics of the Hunter Association, and the determination of Killua to save Gon. As the events unfold, secrets are revealed, and the fate of the Hunter Association hangs in the balance.

Under the patronage of the Kakin Empire, Isaac Netero's son, Beyond Netero, spearheads the expedition. However, there are concerns and opposition to the expedition from various parties, including the powerful V5 (Five Great Calamities) organization. The V5 wants to put a stop to the expedition due to the potential risks it poses.

The remaining Zodiacs, the elite group of Hunters, take it upon themselves to try to halt Beyond's mission. They seek the help of Leorio and Kurapika in their efforts. Simultaneously, Ging, another member of the Zodiacs, joins Beyond's expedition party but also attempts to obstruct Pariston, a fellow Zodiac member, from interfering with the expedition.

As the story unfolds, tensions rise, and various factions maneuver to influence the fate of the Dark Continent expedition. Eventually, the V5 endorses Beyond and Kakin's project, and the Hunter Association is hired to act as a chaperone for the expedition.
