The 90-minute Donald Trump vs. Kamala Harris presidential debate turned fiery, as the two clashed over various issues like the economy, foreign policy, immigrants, and even abortion. The debate, hosted by ABC on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, was the first time that Donald Trump and Kamala Harris came face-to-face.
During the debate, Kamala Harris criticized the abortion restriction in various states of America due to the abortion ban placed in 2022. As Trump took the credit for the Supreme Court’s ruling about the overturned Roe v. Wade, Harris blamed the former President, saying:
“Let’s understand how we got here. Donald Trump hand-selected three members of the United States Supreme Court with the intention that they would undo the protections of Roe v Wade. And they did exactly as he intended.”
She continued:
“And now in over 20 states, there are Trump abortion bans, which make it criminal for a doctor or nurse to provide health care. In one state, it also provides prison for life.”
As soon as Kamala Harris’ statement from the debate went viral on social media, several netizens began commenting and applauding her thoughts. One social media user commented under a post by Pop Crave about the same:
“Kamala said what needed to be said. A woman’s body, a woman’s choice. End of story. #ReproductiveRights.”
Others also added their comments:
“The way she’s cooking him,” said one social media user.
“It’s plain and simple, why are men determining other peoples lives,” wrote another X user.
“That's my thoughts exactly! It's all about a woman's choice,” exclaimed another.
“Yes, Kamala! We need a President who will protect our reproductive rights and ensure access to safe and legal abortion. Period,” exclaimed a netizen.
“OH QUEEN YOU DIDNT HAVE TO CLOCK HIM LIKE THAT,” said one more X user.
“Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body”: Kamala Harris criticizes former President for abortion laws
As Kamala Harris lashed out at Donald Trump, and mentioned how women get to choose if they want their baby to be born, she also said:
“Trump abortion bans that make no exception, even for r*pe and inc*st, which understand what that means. A survive of a crime of violation to their body does not have the right to make a decision about what happens to their body next. Nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion. That is not happening, it's insulting to the women of America.”
She continued:
“One does not have to abandon their faith, or deeply held beliefs, to agree the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body."
During the debate, the duo spoke about several other issues. Kamala voiced her thoughts about Israel, and the two also argued over border policies, crime rates, and even Biden’s tenure, during which Kamala Harris served as the Vice President.
It is worth noting that, during the debate, Donald Trump spoke for 28.6 minutes during the first half, while Kamala spoke for 22.8 minutes. However, in the second half, Kamala Harris left with 12.5 minutes and Trump spoke for only 11.3 minutes.
For the unversed, the US Presidential elections are to be held on November 5, 2024.
