A clip showing Rachel Maddow an MSNBC host, breaking down on air has been circulating all across social media, and many netizens claimed that it was about a meme that Elon Musk posted. The video got viral sometime after the Tesla CEO took to X, and shared a tweet on November 24, 2024, which read:
"And lead us not into temptation…"
Along with the caption, was a meme showing a priest was battling to maintain his purity with a woman exposing herself. The words "Elon Musk trying not to buy" were mentioned on the priest while MSNBC was captioned on the woman.
According to the viral clip of Maddow, she had a "break down" after seeing the post, and the channel headlines read "Elon Musk posts dangerous meme." A lot of netizens happened to comment on Maddow's clip as well. A user (@_IDonaldTrump) shared the clip and wrote:
"Rachel Maddow impersonating Mark Cuban has an on air meltdown about a harmless and funny meme Elon Musk musk posted about possibly buying the lifeless MSNBC."
The clip, however, is unreal and misinterpreted, as confirmed by Times Now News. The original unedited video is from 2018 when she got emotional over a report about "tender age" shelters and how migrant kids were "separated" from their parents. A user (@lisaolywa) clarified the same on X as well, where they tweeted:
"This video has been altered. This was originally Maddow's reaction to certain immigration policies under the Trump administration, as seen in the original video."
Rachel Maddow, thus, didn't cry over the meme that Elon Musk recently shared on social media about buying the channel.
Is MSNBC for sale for Elon Musk to buy it?
While Elon Musk had been joking about buying MSNBC, as per reports by CNN published on November 25, Comcast, MSNBC's parent company has not yet put the channel out there for sale. Musk has, however, made some casual remarks about buying it.
After the rumors about its sale went viral, Musk tweeted on November 23:
"The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely 😂."
Joe Rogan too responded to the Tesla CEO's remark and suggested he would be up for replacing Rachel Maddow.
To this, Musk responded by saying "deal." The particular conversation between Joe Rogan and Musk sparked reactions from other conservatives.
Comedian Tim Young shared another tweet implying that he'd pray to God for the sale to happen. Conservative author Carol Roth posted a tweet in which she expressed her desire to be in a show named The Normal View, a spoof of ABC's chat show The View.
Amid the rumors of Elon Musk buying MSNBC, news about the dropping ratings of the channel have made headlines. In 2016 too, after Trump won the presidential race, The Rachel Maddow Show witnessed declined viewership.
As per a report published by FOX News on November 22, 2024, MSNBC's viewership has declined by about 47%. While outlets like MSNBC and CNN have been negatively impacted since the elections, FOX News viewership has increased by 34% since Trump's win.
Despite the reduced viewership, there's no confirmation about MSNBC being actually bought by Musk.
