Microsoft recently announced that all PCs running Windows 11 will now function as "AI PCs" with a built-in AI called Copilot, which allows users to speak to it. According to The Verge, the decision was announced on October 16, 2025, days after Microsoft stopped providing support for Windows 10 on October 14.

According to the Microsoft website, the built-in AI interface will reportedly allow Windows 11 users to improve productivity, everyday activities, education, and creativity. Copilot can help users prepare presentations with detailed prompts, plan their everyday schedule, aid with studying and test prep, and edit videos and photos "like a pro."

"Focus on what matters while Copilot does the rest. With detailed prompts like, “Draft an informal email about…” or “Catch up on missed items,” you can get more done and keep things on track with the help of AI and Microsoft 365. Presenting to a group? Ask Copilot what font is most legible. Need help organising your PowerPoint? Copilot can do that, too," the website added.

It continued:

"Create and edit images like a pro. With AI tools in Paint like Image Creator and Background Removal, you can generate and iterate images with a prompt or edit existing photos to remove a background and isolate subjects."

Windows 11 to use Copilot's Vision and Voice capabilities

According to an article on The Verge, dated October 16, 2025, Microsoft will reportedly include AI features to its existing Windows 11 system instead of asking buyers to purchase a special Copilot Plus PC. The operating system will use Copilot's Voice and Vision capabilities to help users communicate with their systems. The built-in AI can be activated by saying "Hey, Copilot!" and the AI assistant can also be found on the Windows taskbar.

Speaking to The Verge, Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer, said the company's vision was to "rewrite the entire operating system around AI," saying:

“We think we’re on the cusp of the next evolution, where AI happens not just in that chatbot and gets naturally integrated into the hundreds of millions of experiences that people use every day. The vision that we have is: let’s rewrite the entire operating system around AI, and build essentially what becomes truly the AI PC.”

“You should be able to talk to your PC, have it understand you, and then be able to have magic happen from that. With your permission, we want people to be able to share with their AI on Windows what they’re doing and what they’re seeing. The PC should be able to act on your behalf.”

He added that the user's voice will function as the "third input mechanism" in addition to the keyboard and the mouse. Mehdi further said the company's work with the accessibility community has helped them improve on how "to make voice access and voice typing really valuable."

Copilot Vision, an opt-in feature, will reportedly allow the AI to see everything open on the users' screens. Following this, Copilot Actions will help users take action in their systems by launching in a separate “secure and contained environment," and the AI assistant will run the user's command in the background while they continue using their PCs.
