On August 9, Australian break dancer Raygun sparked a memefest online after she performed at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She received criticism for her breakdancing skills. She also released a statement after many raised their eyebrows in regards to her act.
Not many were expecting the Olympics to host a breakdancing competition in the first place. They were then surprised to see Raygun’s (whose real name is Rachel Gunn) dancing. The 36-year-old showcased various moves, including what is known as the “sprinkler.”
Unfortunately, she did not receive points from the judges and was also knocked out at the round-robin stage of the competition. Nonetheless, netizens took to X to share hilarious memes about her dancing, with one comment that read:
"Really hit them with the Tyrannosaurus"
Raygun said in a statement that her entire choreography was “original” and that she values authenticity. Meanwhile, internet users continued to make jest of her performance with other memes reading:
The breakdancing event featured two live DJs and three battle rounds, which involved two 60-second routines by each performer. Reacting to Raygun’s dancing, other netizens said:
Rachel Gunn was unable to win a point in any of her three contests in breakdancing. She was also unable to beat her 16-year-old French competitor, Syssy.
“I do my thing” — Raygun discusses performance in press statement
Rachel Gunn, aka Raygun, obtained a PhD in breakdancing and dance culture. She has experience in various dance forms, including jazz, tap, and hip-hop. While speaking to the Australian Associated Press on August 9, Gunn admitted that she knew that she would not win against her younger competitors. She said:
“What I wanted to do was come out here and do something new and different and creative- that’s my strength, my creativity. I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move different, be artistic and creative because how many chances do you get that in a lifetime to do that on an international stage?”
Speaking about her dance moves, Raygun added:
“All my moves are original. Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry. Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about.”
Japanese B-girl Ami Yuasa ended up winning the gold medal after topping all three rounds.
