Kamala Harris is currently making headlines as she is expected to be the Democratic nominee for president. This happened after Joe Biden decided to step down from the campaign on Sunday, July 21.
Following this, a large number of individuals supported Harris, including an American actor and television host and Harris’ ex-boyfriend, Montel Williams. About 20 years ago, in 2001, when they were both single, Harris and Williams dated briefly.
The pictures and videos of Williams and Harris resurfaced on the internet when Williams took to X to publicly support and endorse the US Vice-President on July 22.
Kamala Harris dated Montel Williams briefly 23 years ago
In 2001, Montel Williams, known for The Montel Williams Show, had a brief romance with Kamala Harris, who was then working at the San Francisco City Attorney's Office.
At the time, Williams had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. They made their public debut together at the Eighth Annual Race to Erase MS in Los Angeles, where Williams' daughter Ashley joined them. The viral photo was taken in May 2001 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, California.
When netizens started sharing the old pictures and videos of them together, it brought their former romance back to light. Williams acknowledged their brief relationship, praising Harris and raising concerns about the sexist sides of these stories on August 7, 2019, as he tweeted,
“@KamalaHarris and I briefly dated about 20 years ago when we were both single. So what? I have great respect for Sen. Harris. I have to wonder if the same stories about her dating history would have been written if she were a male candidate?”
Not much is available about their relationship, however, Williams has insisted that he doesn't like it when people bring it up. Reportedly, Williams had earlier criticized Tucker Carlson for bringing up the subject during his show on November 15, 2021.
Carlson said,
“We’re not exactly sure what to make of it. but it turns out that Kamala Harris also dated the tabloid TV show host Montel Williams, who was always doing shows about people’s weird s*x lives.”
Following this, Williams said to Mediaite on November 16 that he "no idea" why the Fox News presenter is interested in the relationship. He said,
“It’s weird. He’s been oddly obsessed with me… for years.”
Williams is now rooting for Harris
On November 13, 2020, news outlets announced the results of the 2020 election and predicted that Joe Biden and running partner Kamala Harris would win the presidency and vice presidency of the United States. This brought attention to Harris and Williams' relationship once more.
After that, the photo of the vice president-elect with Montel Williams began making the rounds on social media.
The picture came to light again now that Biden stepped down and endorsed Harris. Following this, as Wiliams took to X to share a bunch of tweets, people again started talking about their relationship.
To advise the media outlets not to reshare the picture, Williams tweeted on July 22, 2024,
“I’ve said what I’m going to say about the thing that keeps trending. My friends in the media should think twice about wasting time on a 20+ year old picture - you will find doing so will earn an unpleasant reaction.”
Following the tweets, Harris or Williams didn’t share any official statement on their relationship or the election.
