A winter storm passing through the central US, which is to become more powerful than one may expect, called a bomb cyclone, is expected between Friday night and Saturday.

The weather threatens severe snowfall and strong winds throughout the East. Due to this, one can expect severe thunderstorms from the central Gulf Coast into Georgia, the Carolinas and the Florida Panhandle.

Following extreme snowfall on Friday night and Saturday morning, the winter hurricane is expected to strengthen into a raging cyclone by Saturday midday. Damaging winds and heavy snow are expected in the Northeast.

Tennessee and Ohio River Valleys can expect anywhere between 4 and 6 inches of snow. Citizens of Upstate New York and Northern England can expect over a foot of snow. In regards to the expected snow, the National Weather service has warned:

“This will severely reduce visibility and make for difficult to hazardous driving conditions.”

Metropolitan areas including Washington, New York, Boston and Philadelphia will mostly collect some rain and snow.

What is a bomb cyclone?

A bomb cyclone occurs when the process of bombogenesis occurs, which is a winter hurricane. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it occurs:

“when a mid-latitude cyclone rapidly intensifies or quickly drops in atmospheric pressure, marking the strengthening of the storm.”

M Live reported that to reach the criteria of a winter hurricane becoming a bomb cyclone, a storm system’s lower air pressure must be below 24 millibars in 24 hours. Millibars are a metric system used to measure air pressure.

On Saturday afternoon, the air pressure is expected to drop 47 mb in 24 hours, which is much higher than the criteria for a bomb cyclone state.

This is not the first time the country has experienced a cyclone of this nature. It has occurred over the Great Lakes in the past.

The Weather Prediction Center said on Friday that the interior areas of the North East can expect the worst of the storm. Some areas may receive more than 12 inches of snow. The weather service reported that one can expect scattered power outages.
