Squid Game is a Netflix series, released on September 17, 2021. The show is about a group of people who are desperately in need of cash in South Korea. They are tricked into playing a deadly tournament of children's games, and they are given a chance to go back alive. Through voting, almost all of them volunteer to come back, realizing this game may be their only chance to win the money they need to survive. The total money at stake is 45 billion South Korean won, which roughly translates to 38 million USD. But the odds of winning aren't that great for the players.

What does the name Squid Game mean?

In the very first episode, the main character Seong Gi-hun played by Lee Jung-Jae says that Squid Game was a game played by the kids in his neighborhood, once played on a court that was squid shaped. It's a version of the game tag but on steroids, filled with bloodshed.

What does the Squid Game pack?

The show has a dark theme and there is enough blood to paint the wall red. Watching a children's game turn into a deadly battle makes one disheartened and it's not for everyone. But the way the characters are developed and the action set pieces are set and moved quickly never lets up for long.

The main character, Seong Gi-hun, is a dad who is desperate for money, he is someone the audience can easily root for but he's human with flaws that make him more relatable. There's an episode where his actions lead to a heart-wrenching loss. We don't root only for him, there are other players including an elderly man who becomes the grandfather of the group, a North Korean refugee, a gangster with a snake tattoo on his face, and an educated man who was the face of his hometown, but was not able to live up to his potential.

The show doesn't take too much time in introducing the characters, once the basics are established the games are on. Once you've watched an episode, it's hard not to keep coming back for more, even if it is just to see who survives the next twisted game. And then that ending.
