According to recent news, former Light Heavyweight World Champion Sergey Kovalev is set to make his return at cruiserweight against the unbeaten Tervel Pulev.

Kovalev has not fought since 2019 when he was knocked out in the 11th round by pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez. The Russian produced a good performance against the Mexican in the first half of the fight but seemed to fade thereafter.

Fellow Russian boxer and Canelo Alvarez's next opponent, Dmitry Bivol, recently told the media that Kovalev did not have enough time to train, which contributed to him losing to the Mexican:

"I talked to him Sergey, and he said he just didn't have enough time to prepare and after seven rounds he just feel himself empty."

'Krusher' was previously considered one of the best light heavyweights in the world with impressive victories against Bernard Hopkins, Anthony Yarde and Jean Pascal. He also has incredible punching power that has led him to 34 victories and 29 knockouts.

Significant defeats in his career include losing controversially to Andre Ward over two fights which included a close decision and a stoppage from low blows. He also got knocked out by Eleider Alvarez in 2018 before getting his revenge in their 2019 rematch.

Sergey Kovalev vs. Tervel Pulev

Sergey Kovalev's fight against Pulev will be his first fight in the cruiserweight division since facing Grover Young back in 2011.

Despite not being well-known, the Bulgarian Pulev has a perfect record with 16 wins coming from 13 knockouts. At 6'1", Pulev is likely to be the bigger man in the ring and is a career cruiserweight. Both fighters are almost 40 years old which may suggest their best days are behind them.

Tervel Pulev is the younger brother of heavyweight boxer Kubrat Pulev. He has an extensive amateur career and won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games.

After three years of inactivity, this comeback fight for Sergey Kovalev will show the boxing world if he has anything left.
