What is Richardson Hitchins' ethnicity?

Richardson Hitchins is of Haitian ethnicity. However, he was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Sept. 26, 1997, to Haitian parents and is an American national. While Hitchins has lived in the United States for most of his life, he represented Haiti at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after he failed to qualify for the United States' Olympic boxing team. He lost against Gary Antuanne Russel in the finals of the U.S. Olympic trials.

Richardson Hitchins' journey to representing Haiti at the Olympics

In his interviews leading up to the 2016 Olympics, Richardson Hitchins stated that his coach had encouraged him to represent Haiti. However, he did not pursue the goal and was inclined towards representing the USA.

Another American boxer with Haitian roots, Andre Berto, played a crucial role in Hitchins representing Haiti in the 2016 Olympics. Berto, who represented Haiti in the 2004 Athens Olympics, paid for Hitchins to fly to Azerbaijan for the qualifiers and make it to the country's Olympic team.

While Hitchins was reluctant to go to Azerbaijan, his publicist, Julie Goldsticker and close friend, Shakur Stevenson, convinced him to take the opportunity.

As expected, Hitchins qualified for the Haitian Olympic team. However, the quest did not yield the expected results as Hitchins lost to Gary Antuanne Russel, now representing the U.S. Olympic team, at the 2016 Olympics.

While he could not win an Olympic medal for Haiti, Hitchins led a successful boxing career in the years that followed. At the time of this writing, he holds a 19-0 (7 T/KO) record in professional boxing and is the current IBF super lightweight champion.
