Wales overcome lively Fiji to move towards quarterfinal spot at Rugby World Cup

Fiji looked strong, but were overcome by a powerful Welsh opposition

Wales had to dig deep to beat Fiji 23-13 in their Pool A clash at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

As they had previously done against England and Australia, the Fijians once again put in a performance that scared their more fancy opponents. Bringing the fight to Wales, the Fijians forced them to dig deep before they emerged victorious. Wales now have three wins from three. They could not, however, get the bonus point, unlike what England had managed to do.

Wales scored two tries in the first half through Gareth Davies and Scott Baldwin. That looked to have set Wales on their way to victory.

A six minute siege in the Fijian camp led to the first try, when Davies penetrated the defensive line to score between the posts and register his fourth try of the tournament.

Baldwin then addded the second on 32 minutes after getting the ball over from close range. Wales went into half-time with a 17-6 lead.

However in the second half, fatigue seemed to catch up with them while the Fijians displayed exemplary fitness. Fiji then scored the try of the game when a rapid break by Asaeli Tikoirotuma set up Vereniki Goneva on 48 minutes. That reduced the deficit to just four points.Dan Biggar's place kicking in the end saw them over the line as it helped calm Welsh nerves by pushing the lead back to 10.

Wales' last fixture comes against Australia next weekend. That comes after the big clash between Australia and England this Saturday.

"Got to give great credit to Fiji, it was very tough. I was knackered in the first half", Wales captain Sam Warburton said after the match.
